I went to my OBGYN today, and she gave me a breast exam, and said that she wants me to get a sonogram of my breasts at a hospital. She said that she felt cysts in at least my right breast.
My mother just had a double mastectomy (SP?) two days ago, so I'm kinda nervous about this. Anyone gone through it?

TIA

ETA - I'm 28

of course I havent, but thru my life so many times I had something that made the doctor raise there eye brows and run more test, so far its all good. I bet because of your mom there being real careful, and thats good

Nothing to it. I have had several. I have very dense breasts so about every other year the radiologist requests an ultrasound just to get a better look. With the ultrasound they can take a look at the density of the cysts to determine whether any of them look suspicious. One thing about it, it's a LOT less painful than a mammogram.

More times than I care to count.

I have had mammo's since about age 40 (I will be 50 this year). My very first mammo, had to go back for 'additional' views and a sono.

I have had several sonos since that time. It is easy and will relieve you of any anxiety as soon as the doc does it.

Good luck.

Every year!
I have very dense breast tissue and dozens of cysts so the breast physician I see does an ultrasound at every check-up.

Hope things go well and try not to worry too much:hug:

Same here. It's a cake walk compared to a mammogram. Not painful at all. They even warm up the gel they use. :) They should be able to give you the results before you leave.

I hope your mother is doing well and that you get good news from your sonogram. I'll keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.

I've had sonograms and mammograms since my late twenties, due to lumpy breasts and family history. I'd rather have them then not, and have to wonder if something was growing. The sonograms don't hurt at all. Good luck to you and a quick recovery to your mom.

Started mammograms at 24 and MRIs at 30 - call back rate for ultrasound of about 30%. Ultrasounds are totally painless and quick - though I totally understand the stress of needing one.

I just had one this week. It was much easier than the mammogram that they did right before the ultrasound.

Had my first mammogram at 18 (mom's had breast cancer x 2 and her mom died of it) and have had to have spot compressions or sonograms after almost ever single one of them.

Try not to let it worry you too much, I just try to tell myself they're being extra careful to those ladies of us with strong backgrounds!

Thanks for your responces.
I'm not really scared about it.... just nervous. Its really ironic that I'm being called in for this right after my mother has a double mastectomy, KWIM. I'm only 28, so thats good. Plus when I was 17 or 18 I had a breast reduction, so theres scar tissue in there, so that may be what shes feeling as well, who knows.
Anyway, thanks for your posts - really appreciated.

I went through the same thing last fall (and 3 or 4 times previously). I had my annual at the end of October and my doctor felt a lump. I had a PCP exam a month before and he did not notice it, I had not noticed it so it must have been new. When I felt it, I could not believe how big it was! It was time for my annual mammo, so she wrote it up as a diagnostic, which means it would be done with the radiologist on site. I also had some bleeding problems so she also wrote me up a pelvic ultrasound. So I had them scheduled for the same day (same place). I was so nervous! For the breast, they did the mammo and then an ultrasound. When the radiologist came in to do the ultrasound, he said he thought it was a cyst. He did the ultrasound and confirmed it was a cyst. He said if it started to bother me (pain), to come back and they would "pop" it. The pelvic ultrasound showed fiboids. I had a follow-up with my gyn for both problems in January, by then the cyst had disappeared. Now that I think about it, I think my first ultrasound for cysts was when I was about 28 (49 now).

i have a number of friends who are all around your age that have had cysts found in their breasts. they all came back neg for cancer, but they sure were scared to find out that they had a number of cysts. i have a very tiny cyst on my thyroid, that i had an ultra sound done last year on (i'm 26) it was a piece of cake. they put the gel on my throat and used the probe around my throat. it wasn't uncomfortable at all. i work on breast cancer and i've found out that cysts are very common in the body and most are benign (yes, even in the breast). it's good that you're keeping on top of this though. the earlier you catch breast cancer the better! good luck!

When I read your post first, I thought you were saying that the cyst turned out to be a piece of cake and not a cyst. Duh me.
