"Breaking" a dog from offering its paw?

Here she is:

Ok PD, I go along with you when it comes to the whole BBQ thing, I suggested a a good place to stay in Orlando a few years ago but I cannot look at that adorable face and go along with ignoring her. Someday she will be grown and have pups of her own and she will not want to bother with you:rotfl: Then you'll be sorry!

No pups. She was spayed very early on. Though, except for the standard - read MASSIVE - amounts that she sheds, I would probably love to have one of her offspring. She is an awesome dog. :)

:rockband: I wanna hold your hand.....

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)

She is cute and I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions.

Ahhh, she is so beautiful. Ignore her paw or redirect her behavior and the paw offering should extinguish. Or as others have suggested, "train" her to give you her paw only when you ask for it (pairing "shake" and a treat when she offers the paw but ignoring the paw when you do not "shake" + treat). If a food treat is not available, do not worry, you paying attention to her, saying the word "shake" and taking her paw is also a reward for her behavior.

I have no advice, must be a Golden thing! Along with the paw from Zoe we get what we call the arm flicker: she nudges with her snout under your arm/hand to get you to pet her. I agree, Goldens are awesome dogs, well we've also learned over the past three months that Papillons are pretty cool too. How could you possibly ignore this face? lol

No advice, but that sounds so cute. My dog does something similar, and it's the funniest thing. When she was little, I trained her to give me her paw. It took a while, but we all went absolutely nuts whenever she did it. Now, whenever she wants something that we're eating, she'll hop around you picking up her paw waiting for the treat. Another one of her tricks is if you're just sitting on the couch or lying in bed, she like to wiggle her head under your hand and slides herself back adn forth so you wind up petting her.

Not a golden, but shih tzu's are smart little things.

I had a gold/lab mix and a shep/lab mix and the hair was horrible but they were fanstastic dogs and it was a small price to pay. It really is unbelievable how much they shed I had 3 vaccuums that I used one for each floor and they filled up so much that if I empited them all at once they filled a huge garbage bag.

My dog does this. If we're eating a snack, he'll come up and put his paw on our leg. We just say "No, Shiloh" and he removes it, but it doesn't stop him from doing it the next time.

Hurley does this too...maybe, he really is part Lab even though I don't see it in his face. Only his is more of a smacking that he sometimes does if I'm not petting him and sometimes does if I am petting him. I used to think it meant either "pet me" or "stop petting me" but I'm not sure anymore.

On of our goldens will do this if the other one comes too close while we are petting him. It's like be is claiming us or something. And it is anoying because he always manges to scratch us. Have NOT been able to break him of it yet

She has become OCD with this habit.

Since I have a OCD Border Collie with her ball, you teach her "NO PAW".

She will pick it up pretty quick, you will be surprised. The key is that everyone has to say it to her and mean it. Now it will take awhile for the OCD part to subside.

You will need to train her with "PAW" (since you said you did not train her with it) and "NO PAW" (or NO SHAKE, etc..).

Or you call say "ALL DONE" or whatever command works for you.

If we can do it with a Border obsessed ball dog you can teach her with the paw. It can be done.:thumbsup2

My female golden offers us her paw when she wants something. She either wants love or to go outside. It is how she gets my attention. I honestly love it and think it is adorable. I'm an easy going dog owner though. I didn't do much "breaking" other than the house variety.
