Breakfast on vacation

We usually eat breakfast in the room except for the one or two days we do a character breakfast. Eating breakfast usually means cereal, toast, juice excpet when DH feels like making eggs, pancakes, etc. DH usually does that at least twice while on vacation. He likes to cook even while on vacation! Lucky me!! :)

I was shocked that we made breakfast.

One of our guests was doing Atkins - and while picking up a Danish and Coffee is easy at Disney, picking up a carb free breakfast on the go is nearly impossible. So she needed to start each day with a two egg omlette. Since we bought eggs for her, and had the pan out, the two egg omletted turned into two four egg omlettes which pretty much fed everyone. Plus toast for us carb eaters. And coffee, which we were making anyway. Really easy. And with six people getting ready in the morning and using two bathrooms (although the preschoolers don't shower in the morning), it didn't add much time.

We usually make breakfast in the room about 60% of the time, usually juice, cereal, milk and fruit, even in a studio. When we have a larger unit I buy 1/2 dozen eggs for the 10 days we are there (it is usually 2 adults, so no need to fix BIG breakfasts), and always coffee, even on breakfast "out" mornings at Olivia's.

I've never prepared a full dinner in the room, sometimes some sandwiches with lunch meats or something pre-packaged, but no steaks or spaghetti or anything "messy".

We usually eat a full service large lunch in the parks.

I have to eat breakfast in the villa. Eating out is too expensive, too time consuming, and makes me feel like I have to look nice. We also eat most (at least 3/4) of our dinners in the villa for the same reasons. Besides, saving money on meals is one of the ways I convinced DH DVC wouldn't be too expensive.

You have to be kidding me!!! do you know how hard it is to get teens, young twenties up for breakfast so you can get to the park early - Never! I love the kitchens- always have fruit, cereal milk, bread, bagels for the late risers while we might make eggs and toast.
I also like it for lunch so we take a quick break and whenever everyone comes back from the parks they can have what they want - frozen pizza, cold cuts, salads.
for dinner I always do atleast one dinner in - I know I am crazy but just before we leave I make homemade sauce and meatballs and freeze them. I then bring them in a small insulated bag in my carry on. Our plane ride is only 3 hours so it stays frozen. I hate to say it but I get tired of eating out, we do it at home atleast once a week. So that one home cooked meal is the best to break it up. We pick up Italian bread and salad to go with it. And then there's always left overs for meatball sandwiches, etc. I love my kitchen in DVC.

We've just joined the 'breakfast makers club'!! My dh really likes to get out and eat in the restuarants. But when I showed him how much we were spending....well, he started getting into those quick breakfasts in the villa. They were mostly coffee/cereal things and pop-tarts for dd. Maybe we'll expand and do some eggs for Nov. trip. And some lunches also. It's a great way to save time and money.

Our next trip will be in a studio. I, trying to eat healthy--want to make breakfast in the room. Do you think it'll be a stretch to make bagel egg sandwiches???? or does everyone basically stick to cereal/fruit in the studios????????? I'd appreciate any studio breakfast tips anyone has!!!!

Thanks
Flo

Also, while I'm remembering to ask--how much are the washer and dryers in the hallways (alas --I'll miss the 2-bdrm villa we were in last time!!!!)???? Thanks again!!!!!

Other than 1 character breakfast somewhere each trip, we always have breakfast in the villa.

Usually it is just bagels, toast, cold cereal and the like, but at least once or twice each trip we will do a "Sunday Breakfast" sort of thing with eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, etc.

I think trying to "make" a bagel and egg sandwich in a studio would be a stretch, since there is no stove to cook the egg. However, there are some frozen breakfast sandwich type things you can fix in the microwave. But, yes, we usually stick to toast, cereal and fruit...if we're in the mood for eggs or pancakes we eat out.

Washers and dryers for folks staying in a DVC Studio are free. They look and operated like standard coin-op machines, but the money slots are sealed. You may want to pack or buy offsite some laundry tabs, as the detergent available onsite is rather pricey.

I love just waking up and having a cup of coffee at my own pace in the morning. Read a little newspaper and relaxing on my balcony watching everyone else head off is great. Over a five day trip, we generally eat breakfast at a restaurant just once. the rest is bagels or eggs or cereal in the room. I get tired of eating out all the time, so saving money on breakfast is huge. Also, while some of the restaurants have a nice menu to start off the day, most of the time the food is just average. Hashbrowns, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, they all have been made before you get there and are not the freshest by the time you order at most places. Not all are like that though. Best breakfast in my opinion if you do go is Kona Cafe in the Poly. Get Tonga toast or the Big Kahuna. But otherwise, you will be on the go the rest of the day, so just relax in the morning. There is nothing in the World like watching Disney waking up.

We eat out a lot, but I gotta say after several meals out, our bodies crave normal food.... lol

soooooooooo

I cook. It is cheaper, my kids prefer it, and my DH cleans up afterwards!

So I guess it is about 50/50 for us. With breakfast being eaten in the room 80% of the time.

And for FLO... you can nuke the eggs in a coffee cup, run a knife around the edge, and when the egg log pops out (with luck) slice it up.... Wah La! You can also add cheese but it makes it harder to get the log out.

You can prepare a scrambled egg in the microwave inside a cup, but the cups in the studio are rather small. You might want to think about bringing a larger mug with you. Also, I have a egg poacher that works in the microwave. You might check at Bed, Bath and Beyond or Linen's and Things to see if you can find a similar item.

It's especially nice to be able to drink that first cup of coffee/tea out on the balcony!

We agree!
Coffee tastes sooo good when you can enjoy it without having to rush for a breakfast ps.
So mostly breakfast in-
all other meals out!!:teeth:

It's also nice not to have to drink Disney coffee. It is one of the few things that they haven't figured out how to capitalize on yet. Just the thought of sitting out on the balcony with a nice cup of coffee makes you feel good.

We always buy eggs, etc for breakfast and sometimes we use them but there have been years that we do not finish them. We always get the little cereal boxes because my kids will have them for snacks as well as breakfast. We go out at least twice. But our best splurge is room service on our last morning. It is so nice to be finishing dressing and packing and have that knock at the door with fresh mickey waffles, and whatever else we want.

We make our own coffee. We like those Maxwell House filter packs with a special creamer.:jester:

We love having breakfast in our villa. I prepare waffles and other items that can go into the toaster or microwave before leaving home. I keep everything in an insulated bag. That way we save a lot of money, and enjoy convienient homemade food. I agree with several others - There is nothing like enjoying a pot of tea on the balcony before heading off to the day's activities.:sunny:

We always stop at the grocery store on the way from the airport, maily to buy breakfast supplies.

I enjoy my coffee while my girls have their cereal and juice. This helps us to get a jump on the day. :D

We ALWAYS use the kitchen for breakfast and snacks, but usually only cook once or twice for dinner if we have guests with us. If we are traveling with just the two of us, we only eat out for dinner. Our October GV trip will include several folks who can't afford to eat out much, so we will do quite a bit more cooking than normal.

In all of our trips, we've eaten breakfast out once and that's because we had a princess who needed to schmooze with the other princesses in epcot. Otherwise it's cheaper, better, quicker to just eat breakfast in.

Nothing like sitting on your personal porch at OKW drinking that first cup of coffee with the smells of breakfast cooking coming through the open door while you watch the sunrise, listen to the hum of diesel engines in the distance, going over your plans for the day and thinking how nice it is to not have to sit on one of those ledges they call balconies at the other DVC resorts. :hyper: :hyper:
