Break Dancing a Sport?

NBC has announced that when the 2024 Olympics are held in Paris they'll have a new event -- break dancing. I can't say I've ever considered that a sport. What do you think?

I think any type of dance performed at the competitive level could qualify as a sport.

I used to DJ at "Break Skate" events. It's just break dancing on skates. But Break dancing as a whole takes incredible strength and ability to do some of the "moves" they do. at the 2:00 mark you will see some the ability's I'm talking about.

I think that's dumb.

I have no issue with it. I still hope one day cooking will be an Olympic sport (or that a World Cup of cooking will be created).

I think it absolutely is. I would liken it to a more hard-hitting floor routine in traditional gymnastics. I absolutely love to watch it, in it's myriad of forms.

I imagine this would be like Cutthroat Kitchen on steroids: Now Joe has to make a soufflé with only four matches and no eggs. *crowd gasps* Can he pull it off? *crowd goes wild* Soufflé ends up being the best one of the judges ever tried, another complains it tastes like there are no eggs, a third wonders why there is such a strong acrid smell in the air and marks it against the cook based on aesthetic.

There are so many other judged sports that it surprises me that they haven't tried to introduce more dancing into the Olympics.

With breakdancing, I think I need to let things play out and we'll see where it goes.

The big question here. How will NBC get people more angry about their coverage of the sport?

My knee jerk reaction is "no". But then I think about other various sports that are judged subjectively... gymnastics, snowboarding, diving, and figure skating all immediately come to mind. So what makes those different than break dancing?

Why not? I think it is as much a sport as figure skating, rhythm gymnastics, synchronized swimming (really none of them are sports to me!)

Someone's trying too hard to be hip! The kids still wont watch the Olympics unless you can somehow get them likes for viewing it, but nice try!

The French could never win baseball/softball. Too North American for them.

Part of the Olympic mission is to get the world more active. Any healthy activity that accomplishes that is a good thing. Still want that Olympic cooking competition to happen though. Food Network should get on that. Something better than Iron Chef please.

My understanding is that softball got kicked because not enough countries compete in the sport. Baseball got dropped because of softball getting dropped.

nope not a sport- just like cheerleading is not a sport.

I disagree. I'd probably be less annoyed if they eliminated other sports like soccer as well. Maybe add twirling or competitive cheer?
