Bread & milk - what do you buy when a storm is coming?

Just to remember all of the times up north when we actually had to use it for traction.
Of course, we have to go to Publix and buy bread and milk. Why? Just because. But, now it is 7 grain whole wheat bread and not "white" bread. And, 1% milk instead of whole milk.

And, we fill up with gasoline, just in case we want to go to WDW to see the "snow" at MGM.

As Delswife would say to her crew up in Maine, Love ya, Mean it! (For those who don't know who "Delswife" and crew is, I suggest you go to the trip report forum and read her trip reports during the snow storm. They are really fun to read.

We don't run out and buy anything. It isn't like we are going to be snowed in for a week so there really is no need to panic. I am in Maryland and we are only getting 4-8 inches this time. No big deal as far as I'm concerned. I think what drives me crazy is going to the store AFTER a storm when I am out of something and finding the place empty because everyone decided to stock up on things they don't even need. Does anyone seriously think they are going to starve if they don't have bread and milk for a day or two? People that do this drive me crazy!:p

We dont run out and buy anything. But the first of winter we are sure to have extra batteries, extra gas for the generator and we always have a milk gallon of water on hand. If we know an ice storm is coming we usually fill the pots up with water for the toilets. We went through one blizzard with no power for a week, the house got down to 32 degrees inside and noone could get to us. Dont want to go through that again ever. After the blizzard of 93 we bought a generator. You guessed it, the power has not been off more than 3 hours since. LOL

I usually keep a few quarts of that Parmalat milk on the shelf for the winter, so that if I am low on milk, I don't have to fight the snow, shoppers etc to go and get milk. DS is 15, and can drink at least a quart of milk at a time, so we usually have 2 gallons in the fridge. And I love to bake bread when it is snowing, and make a pot of soup. Nothing like it after being outside playing, shoveling, etc.:)

I don't stock up on anything either. The grocery store is 5 minutes away, so I know I can get there. My DH is going out for a goody run now. He loves driving in this stuff.

I guess I'm another one who doesn't go out and stock up before a good snow. One Michigan winter ridded me of the idea that I was going to have to turn into a survivalist in order to make it through a snow.

When I lived in Maryland, my high school job was working at the local Safeay. EVERY single time Bob Ryan (the weather guy in DC) said the "S" word, be got SLAMMED! People bought food like the entire Washington Redskins offensive line was coming over for dinner. We would be out of EVERYTHING by 8pm. That's milk, bread, TP, baking supplies, and, one memorable storm, pine nuts.

I guess when you live in a place with average winter snowfalls of 80 inches, you look at things a little differently :)

solotraveler--pine nuts??? :rotfl: :rotfl:

Gail--I will tell DH if he is ever stranded he just needs to show up bearing boxes of chocolate chip cookies, and raspberry danish twist (my 2 personal faves).

I usually make sure I have diapers. A friend of mine always says that people go out for bread and milk for those milk sandwiches because that is all they seem to buy.

Coffee.....lots and lots of coffee... LOL

Also bread and sandwich fixin's (in case we can't cook), milk, sugar (for the coffee - IF we're lucky enough to hang on to our power), and snacks...

Looks like it's gonna be a BIG one!

as opposed to those folks who make bmt runs ... bread, milk toilet paper.
