Does anyone have a bread maker that actually works? I had one several years ago, but it would never make a proper loaf of bread. I'm pretty sure it was just a piece of junk. I'd like to ask for one for Christmas from DH. I'd like to make different kinds of bread and jam.

Thanks!

I just have the inexpensive Oster from Wal Mart and it works great. But the disclaimer is that I had a Sunbeam before this that only lasted about a year and I think Oster and Sunbeam are the same company (or one is a parent company?). My new bread machine is only a few months old but it works like a champ. I think it was about $55 so it wasn't a huge investment for something I use 3x a week. I make pizza dough at least once a week so we figure it saves us at least $10 every Friday night since we quit getting take-out pizza. If my machine only makes it another year, it was still a good investment for us. I will still be annoyed if it quits that soon but would go out and get another one immediately.

I have a sunbeam one I picked up at the flea market for $5. I've also noticed they usually have them at Goodwill for 10$. I'd try there first, it'll save you some money and let you try it out.
I've only made a few loaves of bread in it, but I've made plenty of dough with it. This week is going to be the tester for it. I'm gonna make banana bread in it and use it for making the dough for the rolls.

I received a Zojiirushi 2 years ago - and have rarely bought any bread since. We make our own bulki rolls, dinner rolls, whole wheat bread, english muffins, bagels, pizza dough, the list goes on and on. The zojiirushi makes a typical loaf, and has 2 paddles for kneading, which some find useful when making whole wheat bread. I will admit - I very rarely cook a loaf of bread in the machine, my DS does not like the thicker crust you get. The Zojiirushi's are pricey - but I use mine about 5 days a week - and yes I work full time. LOL I work nights - so what I will do is set the breadmaker up (it has a timer), and it will be ready to either form the rolls, etc when I get up.

Our favorite recipes come from King Arthurs Flour website, and www.recipezaar.com - which is now food.com - but either website will get you to the recipes.

I second the Zojiirushi. My husband is the baker in the family. He got the 2 lb machine for Christmas 2 years ago and this machine is awesome. We use it not only for dough and bread (bread less often since we too don't prefer the crust) but also for jams. This machine is worth the price.

Wow! I'll have to look into this Zoji-thing, but another option is the not use a bread machine at all and take the simple approach. Buy the book "Artisan Bread in 5 minutes a day" or "Healthy Bread in 5 minutes a day". These books are awesome, and if you wanna see how easy their methods are, just go to youtube and look up the same title and watch the vid. It is tasty, wonderful bread and so easy!! (Also makes a great pizza dough)

I have a Breadman that's probably 10 years old.

I go through spurts of using it for about a month or so and then put it away for another 6 months to a year, lol.

I love it, though!
