I hope it doesn't sound like I hated the place -- that is not the case at all. It was fine. But yes, I would have been much happier if we had a renovated room, and our frig worked (it was not a deal breaker, it was just aggravating), and if we had a view of a pool or of the lake. We didn't even actually have a view of the fountain, our room was in the area overlooking the fountain area. We had to walk out our door to see the fountain - if we looked out our window we saw a large patio area. They hold events out there for the conferences - so we got to watch a 'mixer' event one afternoon
I thought about trying to switch rooms, but when we checked in they told us the cabanas were all full. We were only there 4 nights so I just went with what they gave us. I may call and try to get the 'water view' extra cost refunded, for the Principle of the thing.
Oh, no, it didn't sound that way at all! You all clearly had a great time, but who wouldn't enjoy it more with a nicer room, working fridge and view you paid for!
As to calling for a refund - I would suggest emailing WDW Guest Communications: wdw.guest.communications@disneyworld.com . Once you leave it can be difficult to work with the resort directly. I would suggest beginning by complimenting the resort and CM's, then explain the view situation.
At POR we had a waterview room that really was a silver of water, seen between the full pine trees, IF the wind blew in the right direction. We had a lovely corner room with a view of pine trees and the parking lot - which was very nice, but not at a waterview price. I asked the manager to give us a call and when she did explained the view situation - she did say it was considered a waterview, but I asked if she could come have a look - that maybe it was when the resort was new, but no longer. She did come by and changed our room to a std view, refunding the difference.

Good luck and let us know what happens.
