Lucky for you I am the king of...oh never mind.

Well if Ford is quoting you $325 you could probably get it done for $200

Check out craigslist, local paper, or even look in phone book for a ma & pa kind of place, not a chain.

I use a local guy I found off craigslist who works in his garage, he beats anyone's price by ALOT!

I just had rotors turned and wheel bearings repacked for $60.00. This was with no brake pads. Brakes run about $80.00. I'm thinking what the previous poster quoted at $200.00 is about right cause the guy doing mine is family friend.

Just my opinion but there is no bigger ripoff than a factory dealer service dept. unless its under warranty of course and free.

I just paid $246.00 to have new brake pads and new rotors, and the rear break drums cleaned on my '99 Toyota Camry.

That sounds about right.

I took my Escape in yesterday for inspection and they informed me that my pads are at 15%, I should get another 5-6,000 miles out of them. If I get them repaired before they start grinding, it will cost $177, if they grind and I need to replace rotors, it would be closer to $400.

The dealer is always higher. Can't you just wait until your mechanic gets back? Or are they out?

Well they are grinding pretty bad esp. in the wet weather so not sure if i shoudl wait or not. I've tried calling 2 other local places and 1 guy said he had no idea how much it would cost and there was no answer at the other. i know dealears are a ripoff for the most part and i actually got a 15% coupon from ford today which brings it to 276 but i'm guessing that is still high. :confused3 ahh, the joys of owning a car....... ;) :car:

I got all 4 of my pads and rotors on my Dodge Grand Caravan for $150.

I have worked for a dealer in the service dept as a service consultant, asst manager & most recently a service mgr for about 6 years. When I lived in NY earlier this year the average price in labor for a brake job which includes resurfacing rotors is 2 hrs at $90 per hour, so in NY you are looking at $180 dollars + the price of pads. If you are getting pads put on through the service dept most of the time you can buy them cheaper over the counter in parts & walk them to the service dept. I think this is insane however I do not set the prices. Call your parts dept at the dealer & ask how much the pads are & then figure out what they are charging you in labor. You can go to a mechanic of outside shop and it will be less money but I do recommend using factory parts.

Most likely (even with grinding) your rotors do not need to be replaced, unless they have been grinding for years. They just need to be turned, I get these done at O'Reilly Auto Parts for like $15 a rotor I think. I don't recall the price of the pads, but they give them a lifetime warranty (if you are hard on your brakes or plan to keep the car for a loooong time, then the warranty will kick in when you go to replace them again), and they were not that expensive. I changed out my own brake pads, it's one of the easiest things to do on a car. Don't take it to the stealership, find another shop, it should be much much cheaper.

Thank you for your replies. I know dealerships are not the best place to go. I guess i will wait. they have been grinding only in wet weather for a 2 months or so and I have 80k miles on my car and lots of city driving. I think i've had to replace the pads 2 years ago. i wish I knew how to fix cars!

OP: Do you have any large, chain tire places around you? Here we have NTB, Merchant's Tire and Auto (and probably a few others). They do very well with brake/rotor jobs and are quite a bit cheaper than the dealer. They will also just turn them if that is required. I usually do a lot of my car maintenance at the dealer for my Toyotas but not when it comes to this. I've never had a problem with the work they do either.

Do you think it makes a difference if they replace the pads and rotors with Ford brand or some other brand?

In Toronto, the average cost of brakes & rotors, service complete..including rear inspection is about $420.....using Ford parts...not something Made In China. I've gone this route before on my past 3 Ford E-250's with no
problems or issues. Its worth paying a little more sometimes. Some people drive to 2-3 places or waste time and gas trying to get the best deal.
My Ford dealership picks up my car (within 30 mile radius) and does the work and returns the car. I never have had to complain about the work and happy at the results. I have better things to do than to jack up my car and get dirty......just to save 100 bucks !

Most people give dealers a bad rap because they assume that they are trying to rip them off. Most of the time that is not true

If you go to the Ford website for owners, you can download a coupon.

At the local auto parts store, a set of pads will run between 14 to 30 dollars, rotors are generally easy to install and will cost maybe $30 to $ 50 per wheel. Since you are grinding, you will need to at least get them cut. Cutting takes the surface down to where there are no more ruts in the smooth finnish. Since the rotors are now thinner they are subject warping if they get to hot. The Ford Escape has front disk brakes and Rear Drum brakes. I am assuming that the fronts are shot since they do a majority of the stopping. So you are talking maybe $160 in parts and the rest is labor. Repairing brakes is a money generator for most shops. And of course Once you go to Ford they will also tell you everything else wrong on the car.

My advice get the brakes fixed fast, Since you no longer have any material on the pads besides metal, your stopping capability is reducing quickly.

went to honda and they charged this guy $100 to change out the air filter... :|

i paid $100 for brake pad swaps... you can always go to a local ford and get parts and have your mechanic just install them in...

This thread is from 2006. :)
Glad you said that because I was just about to respond. Ford Escape garbage brakes and rotors and I have a lot of history together. The headache is now gone (rolled on it's roof) but I've replaced the brakes and rotors 3 times on that piece of crap in 118,000 miles (replaced rotors, they were too thin to machine for the first 2 changes until I replaced with the "cheap" stuff from Duralast.)
