I actually watched "Super Sweet 16" on MTV.... It's outragous!

Anyways, my son turns 16 this December. We have a spare car that he will be driving so I won't be buying him a custom made Hummer with 6 doors at the cost of $300,000.00 like I saw the other day. My question is do boys have a 16th celebration party? We've done sleepovers ect in the past, but last year he said he was too old for that stuff anymore.

Any ideas or suggestions?

At that age I'd ask him what he would like to do. If you have an amusement park nearby maybe he'd like to take friends and go for the day.

At that age they really aren't into that anymore. My DS just turned 16 and we took him out to dinner with some of his friends. Oh, and in New Jersey you don't get to drive at 16 so we're safe for another year.

When mine turned 16, we had a bunch of boys over to spend the night. We didnt call it a party and didnt have cake, they ate me out of the house and skateboarded all night and tried to convince me to let them go joy ridding in his "new car"..... :rotfl: :rotfl: not a hummer, but a 91 Toyota Corolla that only had 30,000 miles on it. I finally let them drive around the block while I sat on the front porch, I know the neighbors were scared to see 7 boys in the little car.

Honestly If I had that kind of money, yes I would throw my kid a big party if they were deserving... good grades, good behavior etc. Just because they turn 16 isnt a good enough reason there has to be other factors. Also It prob wouldnt be as big as some of those kids parties and while he would have gotten a nicer car, its wouldnt have been some $65,000 BMW, prob just a nice Ford truck. You cant give them everything at once because then what do you do later in life for Graduation, weddings etc.

My DD just turned 16 this past November and for her we took her and a few of her friends in a limousine to see Wicked (which was amazing), and then out to dinner. My DD is on the shy side so it was only 8 of us altogether.

My DS (14) has already asked if we could do something similar for him. Instead of a Broadway play, he wants to see the Harlem Globetrotters (they usually have a game around his b-day). So we will take him and a few friends and go out for dinner.

my DS just turned 16 a couple of weeks ago and wouldn't go out to dinner or let us have a party. I tried to get him to commit to ANYTHING. I couldn't even get him to commit to what kind of cake he wanted.

We ended up buying a snack buffet kind of meal with chicken wings and ribs and meat and cheese trays and veggie trays. I also got a pie, a cake and a cheese cake. I told him since he wouldn't commit, I would just do a little bit ov everything.

The problem with eating out now is that most of the local resturants have his friends working there and it just isn't cool to been seen eating out with your parents and siblings.

On the plus side I got off pretty cheap!

I doubt if DS will want anything done for his birthday then. I knew he wouldn't but was wondering if I should do something anyways. Looks like after all your posts that I'll just let him decide what he wants. He'll probably want to do some paintballing but all the establishments are outside and that wont work in December...lol.

Thanks for all your posts!

Deb

For my DS's 16th birthday, we blindfolded him and brought him and a couple friends to some go-cart tracks and a video arcade where he could "practice driving." It was funny to see him riding inn our truck with a duct-tape blindfold on. They had a blast!! Then they went on bumper cars and I told them this is what NOT to do with the car!!

I have a few years before my DS will be 16.. He's gonna be 14 this year but I bet he wont want a party.. probably more just something with a few of his good friends.. Now DD15 is having a party for her 16th.. We are renting a nearby teen club for 3 hours.. It will be highly chaperoned.. Im thinking I'll rent a limo to take her there..

Throw him a surprise party, he'll either love it or hate it, but he will always remember it.
Actually my ds turns 16 in September and I may just follow my own advice (lol).

my boys did not want a party at that age, not a formal one anyway. What the would like is for me to buy them some burgers and dogs, and let them grill and blare music with a bunch of their friends. They didn't want a hs grad party last year but I made them have one as family really wanted to celebrate. Boys are alot different then girls in these things.

Boys don't have Sweet 16 parties around here. They celebrate in their own way, though. :)

He would like a sleepover...with two Hooter's girls. It's been a long time since I was a sixteen year old guy, but I'm pretty sure he would never forget this present. :woohoo:
