Box Office Discussion

I don't know what I am not following either.

Seriously?

You just said there is no risk creating Rogue One correct? Your reason was because it could be pretty much anything with a Star Wars name on it.

So you are talking financial returns.

LOL and I are talking diminished Franchise exposure-that is the risk like with the "PAST PREQUELS".

it is a risk. But not the way you think.
You think financing the production is hard? When it's Star Wars? That's laughable.
Here is the risk: Many core Star Wars fans still are in shock from prequels. This movie can't be bad...it will dredge all that old disappointment back up.

I also don't know how he is taking a risk with Rogue One. Its Star Wars is one of if not the largest franchises in the world. You could create a movie about Chewie's long lost 3rd cousin and people would go see it because its star wars.

Ok so LoL and your opinion is they are taking a risk and mine is that they aren't. Are we good now?

Yep, it's the age thing like LOL said earlier.

I'm a bit more in the middle, more important things than movie success type thing-but understand it. I certainly crave more movies to choose from though, Star Wars and otherwise.

The good thing is there are a lot like you out there to shield Disney on this. If the movie is "eh" (to some opinions anyway) it will be irrelevant in the grand scheme.

Pressure is off for the majority of the audience. But the ones that care-the risk is on.

I love how we keep bringing my age into this. Just because I am 18 and talking with a bunch of 40+ people doesn't mean I don't know the history of things or can't have a valid opinion. I can guarantee you that the vast majority of people my age are not on a disney discussion board or on any discussion board for that matter. I didn't think my age would be that big of a problem when it comes to any discussion but I guess I was wrong.

I guess it's not age-apologies, but thinking it may as well be about Chewy's 3rd cousin. Hence no risk in this.

Here's what happens around here:

If you go with numbers or facts...you get either:
1. "It's just my opinion and I have 100% right to it...even when I'm wrong...so shut up!!!"
2. "Why you so serious? Don't ruin my fun." (Aka I go to sleep drooling on my pillow about how awesome my vacation is gonna be and I can't deal with anything that's not 100% pro-Disney/positive)

But if you go with opinion, you get:

1. "Show me facts!!! You just made that up...You're wrong unless you can prove it!!!"

You can't win. And that's not just for me...it happens all the time to people I almost never agree with...but still can respect because they have well formulated opinions. Not "defend first...think later"

I am willing to take all criticism on most things...even stuff like insight into business decisions (former analysts get prickly about that) and knowledge of WDW history and operations...that's cool. It's fun

But if it's questioning my understanding of Star Wars and star wars fandom...you're just barking up the wrong tree. So far up the wrong tree that you've fallen out of the top of it...

I was so relieved when Disney bought Lucasfilm. Even though Disney is a business like any other, they do put the right people in place to make something that the fans want and is real to what the franchise is.

Can bear to think what would have happened if Warner Brother For example had bought the IP.

Star Wars is a galaxy that could span hundreds of films and TV series if they wanted and that's what I hope they do. Surprised a live action to series hasn't been re-announced yet.

I agree it's a good match...no doubt.

But they can't sacrifice quality at anytime for simplicity or easy profits...

Why? George Lucas and his awful story prequels used up that credit. In 1998 there was complete faith in the brand...since 2002 it's been a high level of skepticism to go with the support/excitement...

They can't mess up...Bottomline.

Its almost 99% George Lucas would've sold Lucasfilm to Disney before any other company because Disney is a company he trusts and is a fan of. George has been to every single theme park opening since Disneyland in 1955. George has done numerous projects for and with the Disney company.

If you believe the facts...you know...the articles and interviews with George lucas...

He called Iger and offered up. And then took $2 billion less than he would have gotten on the open market.

Who would have paid that much? One word: Comcast.

I have a feeling newscorp would have played too...

So did it matter who answered the phone in the bashful suite?

Maybe...Iger was on Lucas's good side due to the young Indiana jones chronicles...which he defended and kept around longer than he should...

But would another Disney CEO have not gotten That deal done?
Go back and read the articles (10/30/2012- March 2013)...it was really a no brainer.

Im not with you on this one (everything else 100%)...

This is not the truth of this particular situation.

Star Wars is born of a different era...many of us think it was a better era (though we may be wrong)...

There is a deep visceral tie for many fans...perhaps the largest fanbase on earth.

We never thought there ever could be a "bad" Star Wars movie...it was inconceivable in our grey matter...

...to tread that path again would be catastrophic for Disney. They can't screw it up.

Watch "the people vs George Lucas" if you haven't yet.

It's funny as hell...but there's so much truth under the surface.

Pretty glowing report for Iger IMO, regarding landing Star Wars anyway.

Agreed, hence the risk of Rogue One.

But I'm glad they are risking it, playing safe would be just doing VIII down the road.

Not at all...it's "fair"... Speaks to the probable truth that Iger didn't matter much at all.

Disney did...

And when Iger goes to the DMV...the card they give him says "Disney" nowhere on it.

Honestly...if you want to quote...read it first. That's fair

Point is, you said Lucas called Iger, did it matter who was in charge? You said "maybe" and that Iger was on Lucas's good side.

Iger had Disney in a good position to buy Lucas as well.

About 5% he did...the longstanding lucasfilm partnership was probably 95%...

If he had called 9 years earlier...it would have been Eisner who made the deal...10 years later, someone else (hopefully)

None of Igers big deals took too much thought...they were all obvious. The capital was the bigger concern. And he doesn't pay.
