Bouncing Back to the Bayou --- an August 2013 PTR

The restaurant looks really nice! That was too bad about the Lobster and Scallop Lasagna. That sounds amazing! But your pulled pork looks really delicious! That was nice that you got a complimentary dessert out of it. The cake looks so yummy! What is it with kids and Hooters? My kids are obsessed with that restaurant, too! They have never been there, as far as I know, so is it just because they like saying the word, “Hooters”? :lmao:

Hi! I'll join in. I think I read one of your previous reports too. I just wanted to say that I love your Minnie bag - so cute!

I am sooo glad you had such a great experience at the restaurant... It looks really lovely...:goodvibes ....decor... food... service....:thumbsup2

I love that your mom drank 2 glasses of champagne...good for her...:goodvibes and I'll bet Victoria was feeling pretty pleased that she got served...:) ... actually I think that it's actually really nice... it's good for teenagers to learn to slowly drink a bit at celebrations with their families...:thumbsup2

Oh... and New York crowded deserves its whole own category...
(Since I'm about an 1 1/2 to 2 hour ride from there... we can do Daytrips... I've been in those crowds... they can be either exciting or scary... depending on the circumstances...

Its Thanksgiving!! Okay, well its not really Thanksgiving, but it is in my mini trip report! Since our plan to watch it from the hotel window has changed, we had to come up with a new plan. The new plan consisted of getting up at 6am, eating breakfast at the café and heading towards the parade route by 8am. Lots and lots of people had the very same plan as we were no where near the street to see the parade. You want to talk about crowds --- Disney has NOTHING on the NYC crowds for the parade! We noticed it was pretty cold waiting an hour for it to start. Oh, it was sunny, but the buildings are so tall that the sun never made it down to the street. It was very surreal! While hanging out on the street we met 2 actresses from Japan and a really nice lady from Texas. Would you believe there was not an EVC in sight! (sorry, had to sneak that in there!) The parade started and we were able to see the higher floats and balloons.

Its funny because you could actually see how Sponge Bob wasnt fully inflated and how the Kool-Aid balloon kept running into the street signs. I actually had to read online who the stars on the floats were because we really couldnt see them. As for the performances, I guess you have to be near Macys and Herald Square to see any of that. I wish we would have known that prior to going. Also, my Mom found out that you could also pay to have a reserved spot. Ok, Mom&&why didnt you do more research before we left? That would have been awesome! Oh well. Live and learn, right?!

Just wanted to add this one pic of my Mom ---- so happy to realize her dream.....

DSCF2805.jpg

It was then off to find somewhere to eat. I had originally thought my Mom was taking care of making this reservation….um, no. I don’t think she believes in reservations…..seriously. After the parade we went back to the hotel and I looked over the dining guides and information I had gotten at the front desk. Mom did say it was up to me. I picked a place called Victor’s and it was over by Broadway. It sounded good and since my family is used to trying different restaurants at Disney, I thought this would be fun. It was about 3 blocks away --- a nice walk and it was so cool to look down Broadway. We don’t have billboards in Maine, so to see all of those was amazing! We went in and were seated. The place was pretty --- very Cuban feel. We were given menus and it’s then that my mother said she didn’t want to eat here. MOM! We sat down, were given menus and water and it’s NOW that you say you don’t want to eat here? You left this up to me! I was pretty embarrassed to get up and leave. I know that wouldn’t bother some people, but it did bother me. Honestly, I was upset! I told the group it was up to them and that I was now just going to follow. Ugh! We ended up eating at a place called Joe’s. It was good and the architecture in the building was beautiful. It reminded me of an old mill type of place.

The rest of the day was spent walking around and hanging out at the hotel. We were up early so we were all kind of tired. I think this was the evening Peter and I took a walk and went to Pizza Hut for supper. Yeah…..we were bumps on a log, huh??

It is incredible that you got to see the Thanksgiving Day parade in NYC!! And I love the picture of your mom - she looks so happy!

So happy you are doing a little TR for NY!!! I saw a lot of the pics on FB, but want the story that goes with them!! :goodvibes

Yeah, it's taking me some time writing this mini trip report but I've been in such a funk lately that I don't feel like doing much of anything. Today is a good day, but that's rare lately.

OMG! That bathroom looks tiny! Sounds like it was just super old, I'm glad you can laugh about it now, that's probably what I would have tried to do. Disney spoils us, but not THAT much, I think anyone would have been disappointed with that room and all the issues you had!

oh, Karen...it was sooooooo tiny! And there was no fan!! ugh!

Where did you get that smiley? Too cute! Now I have it, too! I think I need to explore the smileys a bit more! :surfweb: It's not like I have WORK to do :rotfl:

You obviously found the smiley!! :rotfl2:

Wow! I’m sorry that the room wasn’t what you expected! Yeah, Disney has spoiled us, but at the same time, that room did seem like it was fairly outdated and the staff clearly didn’t honor any of your mom’s requests! What happened to the 7th Ave view? Did they even apologize for putting you all in rooms with no view? Oh well, as Karen said, I’m glad you can laugh about it now. The Christmas tree was pretty! And, hey, you’re in New York! I am excited to see the rest of the report. I have never been to NYC and I really want to go!

All in all we made the best of it and had a really nice trip. According to what Mom said, they really didn't apologize. She did go down to the desk to complain but nothing came of that. She also said she was going to write a letter. I'm not sure if that ever happened.

I am of two minds about the whole hotel situation...

on one hand... it really does make a great story... the whole ToT thing about the elevator is funny and like Erin said you are in New York together and that is the important thing...

on the other hand...

it seems as if this hotel misrepresented themselves and what they were offering, you don't won't your mother to get taken and this is such a special trip for all of you but especially her... it's really ashamed to think you're getting a parade view room and that certainly wasn't that...

I am anxious and hopeful that things progress more smoothly...

BTW... your mom is really cute...:goodvibes

Yeah, I think Mom is pretty cute and fiesty!! She's the cute little old French lady!

:lmao:

Oh man, Victoria wanted to go to Hooters so bad. I personally don't get it, but I guess it's the age thing.

Hi! I'll join in. I think I read one of your previous reports too. I just wanted to say that I love your Minnie bag - so cute!

:welcome: Thanks for reading along. Hopefully I can keep you entertained.

I am sooo glad you had such a great experience at the restaurant... It looks really lovely...:goodvibes ....decor... food... service....:thumbsup2

That must be neat to be able to go to NYC for daytrips. We can do that with Boston, too. I thought the crowds were neat in one way but irritating in other ways.

It is incredible that you got to see the Thanksgiving Day parade in NYC!! And I love the picture of your mom - she looks so happy!

Well, we got to see the balloons in person anyways. Yep, Mom was so happy and that's what was most important about the whole trip! :goodvibes

Friday morning&..BLACK FRIDAY! You dont really expect me to go shopping on Black Friday, do you? In NYC? Are you insane? So, guess what we did Friday morning --- thats right ---- went shopping!! Oh, and not only just shopping, but shopping at the largest department store in the nation ---- MACYS. OMG!!! So crazy!! Would you believe that Macy's has 9 floors!!! It was absolutely amazing! Crowded as heck, but beautiful. They have old wooden escalators in the building which are really neat.

Our secondstop of the day though was the One Direction store for Victoria. Yes, folks&.they have an entire store dedicated to the band One Direction. It was mobbed with teens and preteens and their tired looking parents. Victoria was in heaven! She had $50 to spend and believe me, she spent it!

Yeah, we are susperstahs!!!!! The next thing that Victoria wanted to do was get her picture with the group. They set her on a green screen and basically photoshoped her into the picture. It was pretty cool!

Ill have to go on her FB to find the finished product and download it and post it at another time. I know, I know, you are all patiently waiting for it Im sure!

Up next is our adventure to Radio City Music Hall and the Christmas Spectacular Show!!!!

I’m caught up again! That’s kind of cool that the buildings blocked out the sun like that! I never would have thought! Your mom looks so happy to be seeing the parade :goodvibes I wonder how much the reserved spots cost? I bet they are an arm and a leg! For the record, I would have been embarrassed to get up and leave a restaurant, too. Joe’s looked nice, though. Ooh! An M&M store! :yay: OK, I can’t believe you went shopping at Macy’s on Black Friday! That must have been an experience! It looks really cool there! I had no idea there was a One Direction store  Thank goodness my daughter doesn’t know this! :lmao: That’s nice that you guys were able to do karaoke! Yes, we want to see Victoria’s picture with 1D!!!

85th Annual Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall

Let me just start off by saying this show was amazing!! The hall itself is so grand and beautiful. It would be hard to describe it in words as it’s just magnificent ---- and the chandelier is unbelievable! The show itself featured the Rockettes, but it also had a storyline to it about a Mom’s quest to find the perfect gift for her daughter. There was even a 3-D part to it. If ever anyone gets a chance to see this show, do it! I can’t say enough good about it. We were sitting right behind a railing, so that served me well as a tripod (just like Karen’s garbage cans at Disney!!). The most beautiful part of the show was when the Manger scene appeared and they told the story of the first Christmas. I cried. It was just beautiful. I hope you all enjoy these pictures.

The M & M store is really cute...:goodvibes I was in there several years ago with Em... loved all the colors in there...

I am really impressed that you braved those crowds in Macy's...:) Macy's Herald Square is really lovely... and you really can see the old touches in places from the 30s and 40s...very cool... you can imagine what it was like during the Miracle on 34th Street era... Didn't you love the windows?

I was waiting and holding back... but I'm so glad that you liked the Christmas Spectacular... I loved it too! It is wonderfully over the top, but so incredibly entertaining and well done... Radio City is so lovely inside ... Thank God it was preserved and never redone or torn down... (apparently they talked about it in the 70s...) I challenge anyone not to have a smile on their face after seeing it. In a strange way-there's a bit of old Hollywood glamour to it... even though of course it isn't in Hollywood... but that retro entertainment glamourous feeling...So happy it was a good experience for you...:goodvibes

We left off with the most wonderful stage show I’ve seen! I’m not sure what time we got out, but we had gone to the 1pm show so I’m assuming it was about 3 or so when it got done. It wasn’t a very far walk back to the Wellington, so we hoofed it. We hung out at the hotel for a bit and then headed down the street for supper. It was Peter’s choice this time and he based his decision on the proximity of the restaurant to the hotel. Good Job Peter! Actually, it was a very nice Italian restaurant called Circo. It had very nice décor and I love Italian food so I was sure everyone was going to be happy with his choice. The waitstaff was ok --- not all that out friendly like we had encountered so far. Eh, whatever. We go to eat, right?

Mom paid the bill and we were off. We spent a little time walking around since it was really nice out and all the lights were really pretty.

Then it was time to head back to the hotel and pack up since we were leaving early the next morning. Mom had arranged for a town car to pick us up and take us to the airport. That was fun!

DSCF2974.jpg

DSCF2975.jpg

DSCF2977.jpg

We were back home from Portland at about 2pm, so we went to my friend Jane’s home to pick up Cutie. She was very excited to see us and we were just as excited to be home.

Wrap up:
Well, the good is all the sights we saw. It’s so different than home and so busy! The streets are set up like a grid, so as long as you knew the address of someplace, it was easy to get to. I bet if I spent more time researching different restaurants and things to do, we would have seen a lot more than we did. We never made it to the Statue of Liberty or Central Park for a carriage ride. I never made it to the Disney Outlet either. It’s hard to please everyone, isn’t it? I would have liked to see the windows along Madison Avenue, too, but we didn’t have the chance. I would have loved to see a show on Broadway as well.

The bad ---- THE HOTEL!!! NEVER, EVER again would I stay there. The rooms are outdated and the service both at the front desk and bellmen were not great. It’s definitely not what they advertised on their website! The people in NYC drive crazy!! I’ve never seen more lane changes without blinkers in my whole life! But, even with all this, Victoria and I would love to go again so we could do the things we didn’t get a chance to. Peter, on the other hand, did not like NYC. Too many people and everything is too close. There was no grass and he’s a farm boy so he was sad to only see concrete! And he missed his chickens!

It’s now Christmas Eve. (Actually it’s only 11am, so I guess it’s not technically Christmas Eve yet). I did go to Wal-mart before work this morning just to get stocking stuffers as I wasn’t going to go this afternoon with all the crazy shoppers! I get out at noon today, but still, I wanted to be all done. Tonight my 2 brothers and I will be going to my Mom’s house for dinner and presents as is tradition. Victoria and I will be going to Mass at 4pm as it’s being said in honor of my father who passed away in 2002. I may not be a great Catholic girl, but I do go to church for Christmas. I’m just hoping Peter will be home in time to go with us. Mom didn’t want me to make anything for dinner this year, so that gives me a little break. I’m going to go home, get Victoria in the tub (as that child procrastinates like you wouldn’t believe!) and relax a little. I have a cold. Ugh! It just came on when I woke up yesterday and I am not happy! At least I don’t have the chills and body aches like I did last night. I did host Peter’s family yesterday for their Christmas. Only 13 people showed up, but that was plenty for me! I had made a ton of food which is now sitting in my fridge as leftovers. Does anyone want any meatballs or little hotdogs? Anyone? Ok, fine. I wouldn’t be able to mail them to you anyways. I made my first toutierre pie (pork pie) for the party as that’s a French tradition and I attempted to make fudge. It came out yummy but messy! It was hard to cut, so it’s not very pretty. Oh well, it’s more important to be yummy, right?? We had a Yankee swap and played the Hot Potato Grinch game. Now that was fun! It’s just like hot potato, but you throw a musical Grinch around and when he stops singing the person holding him is out.

Only one more hour left of work. Yeah!! I do like my job but things in the office have been pretty upsetting lately. It’s hard to maintain a good working relationship when some people just want to cut you down and point out to the supervisor every little error you make. And they are not even errors --- they’re judgment calls which I have to do a lot of in my job. The worst part of the situation is that this person is my assistant. Ugh! It’s like she wants my job! I just wish things were a lot more relaxed. I hate having to watch what I say or how I do things. At least my supervisor doesn’t have issues with me and that’s the most important thing, right? Even so, I have applied for another job. It would be at least $1 more per hour. The State of Maine employees haven’t had a raise in over 5 years, so to promote is the only was to get more money right now. I know that’s only $40 more per week, but it’s something! The good news is that I received this email this morning:

Ann:

I want to thank-you for your interest in our Social Service Program Specialist II position within the Office of Aging and Disability Services located in Augusta. We have completed our review of the direct hire applications we received through the recruitment process, and I’m pleased to inform you that we have forwarded your name to the selection committee to be contacted for an interview.

We will keep your resume on file for six months from the date of this letter. In closing, I would like to thank you again for your interest in this important position and wish you well in the balance of the selection process.

Isn’t that cool??!!! I really appreciate the person taking the time, especially on Christmas Eve to let me know. I thought it was going to be a “You Suck” letter, as that’s what we call the “thank you, but you are not wanted” letters. I’m assuming the interview will be set up after the new year. There’s something to look forward to as well as my 2 trips to Florida in 2013! I really have been blessed, even with all my and Victoria’s health issues.

Wow…..aren’t I just rambling on and on this morning?!…..Karen would be so proud! All my work is done for the day (I didn’t have very much this morning) so I am taking the time to finish up the NYC mini-trip report so we can go forth with more Disney planning!! I bought the movie Brave, so I’m sure there will be a movie night in the near future that I will have to write about.

Everyone, have a MERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! Thanks for being my friends and reading along. It means more than you’ll ever know!!!!

Hey Ann,

Sounds like you had a Merry Christmas but I'm sorry to hear you had a cold... (It's probably a lot to due with all of the pre holiday hustle and bustle...) I'm happy to hear about your new job possibility...

Overall, you're New York trip sounded like it really was a big success...the last Italian restaurant...Osteria Del Circa looks like it had fun decor... too bad the servers were eh...

Just curious because you mentioned your mom being French before and you also mentioned you made a toutierre pie... is your family from Quebec originally? I find the whole blend of the French language and culture melded with the North American really interesting...(I know a bit of French from school and Emily is studying it now...) We were in Quebec City last summer... and we really enjoyed it... I kept noticing how the French culture blended /was unique to North American ie. different in some ways and the same in other ways to when you are in France...

Anyway... I hope you all have a very Happy New Year...

Absolutely! Rambles of any kind are welcome in my book! ;) I'm so glad you enjoyed NYC and that you took so many pics and did a TR! I was pretty impressed that you took food porn shots! I cannot help but photograph my food, it's a sickness. :p I hope you get the job you applied for, that would be GREAT!!!! You'll love Brave, we really did. Can't wait to hear more Disney plans!!! :thumbsup2

So I finally had a chance to go through the whole report a little better - I just posted quickly the last couple of times. NYC looks amazing! I'm sorry to hear about Victoria having PCOS - that must be a lot at age 14. As for the self-harming, please, please don't blame yourself. I have some personal experience with things like this, and as low as I ever was, I never blamed my mom. Sure there were things that weren't perfect, and in certain states you can feel angry at anyone but deep down, I knew that she wasn't to blame. I'm sure that your daughter knows this too. Counselling is a great idea, and it does not signify anything wrong with you or your parenting. These people are trained to deal with these types of situations and they are also impartial 3rd parties. I hope that you are okay with me posting all of this on your report. I hope that you are feeling better now than you were when you made that post.

Both my parents' grandparents were born in Quebec. I think you have to go back about 7 generations to get back to France, though. I read about your trip to Quebec (and Maine!). I love my heritage. I just wish I would have kept up with my language skills as I understand French better than I speak it. My Mom laughs at me and my lack of an accent. I hope you and your family also have a very Happy New Year!!!

I really tried hard to try to take pics before I ate anything. I think I'm getting better at food porn!

I can now empathise with you Karen as the lovely flu hit this household this week. Peter actually ended up in the emergency room last night. He has bronchitis and a sinus infection. Yeah, when we get sick, we have to turn it up a notch, huh? :lmao: He's now on antibiotics and I've turned the corner and am now starting to feel better. Holy cow, I was sick!!

OMG!!! I have news!!! One of my chickens laid their first egg today!!!!! Peter seems to think it was Sweet Pea's but I didn't see it happen, so I don't know. I'm so excited. I did take a flashlight to it to see it it was fertilized, and I don't think it is, but I don't dare crack it to eat it. I'll have to get over that! I'm just tickled about this!!! I know, I know.....it doesn't take much to excite me! :hyper:

Oh I'm sorry you guys are sick! I saw you mention it on FB and hoped it wasn't too bad! But YAY for your egg! :thumbsup2

Well hello everyone!! My household was struck by the flu pretty bad from December 23rd throughout just recently. I started coming down with what I thought was the flu the Sunday before Christmas ---- the day I was hosting Peter’s family for Christmas for the first time. :santa: Great! Oh, the party went well and we all had a great time, but I was feeling like crap! I sucked it up and made all the food including my first toutierre (pork pie) and my first batch of fudge ever!

Peter has 2 brothers (one adopted) and 2 sisters so it would have been well over 26 people, but one of his great nephews had pnemonia and so that portion of the family stayed home. It turned out to be only 16 people. Whew! Did you guys know there is a game called Hot Grinch? It’s like hot potato but with a stuffed singing Grinch. That was a lot of fun.

Back to the Melancon family flu….. Peter is the one who first decided it was time for him to go to the Emergency Room as he just wasn’t breathing well. I didn’t go with him as I was feeling ill myself and had to stay with Victoria. It turns out he had broncitis and sinusitis. Way to go Peter!! Might as well get both at the same time and get it over with. Well, the next night (about 2:30am) I was in so much pain that I asked Peter to bring me to the ER. What I feel horrible about is that we were in the middle of a snowstorm which dumped 8 inches of snow. He had to snowblow the bottom of the driveway where the snowplows make a big ole pile so that we could get out! And it was COLD!! I think 4 degrees or something….Anyways, I was told I had blocked salivary glands and was given an antibiotic, painkillers, and told to suck on lemon drops to get the glands active again. I thought that was kind of weird as I was salivating just fine, but ok, you’re the doctor. I’ll listen to you! After a few hours I was sent home. During that day the pain was just getting worse and not better and I had taken 4 doses of the antibiotic which should have had some effect. So again around 3am (that seems to be the best time for me to be in pain!) I asked Peter to bring me back to the ER. This time my blood pressure was elevated and I was bawling like a baby! They put me in a room with a bed this time around and I had to get into a johnny. This time the doctor had me on an IV with more powerful antibiotics, pain medicine, anti-nausea medicine and he ordered a cat scan of my neck. I know they keep telling me what type of meds they were putting into the IV but honestly I lost track. :faint: Now, a little backstory here ---- when I was 24 they found a lump in my neck which turned out to be thyroid cancer. So, for me to get another lump in my neck was horrific!! :scared1: All those old memories and feelings of what I had been through in the past came rolling back. It was awful. Poor Peter was trying to sleep in the chair as I was being monitored. I finally sent him home telling him to go home so he could really sleep as it was going to be a while that I was going to be there. The final diagnosis was an infection of the salivary glands probably a result of being so sick with the flu prior to that. I was given the option to stay in the hospital with the IV or he could prescribe the same strenth of antibiotic and pain meds to be taken orally. Send me home!!! For the last 10 days I’ve been on this antibiotic 4 times per day and feeling nauseated. Ugh. But, I’m a tough cookie and have been working right along. I did see my primary care physician yesterday and all the swelling is down, but I still have a lymph node that’s inflamed. He stated that should be back to normal within a month. Whew. Throughout all this Victoria was a trooper. She’s 14 and can take care of herself mostly, but I was so proud of her just to let me sleep. I love that kid. So, there is my adventure. Not too much fun, eh? Oh, Victoria thought it would be fun to take pictures that first ER trip so here are some for your enjoyment…..

Ok, Christmas is now over so it’s time to get Disney on the brain full time, not that I don’t usually anyways! I have started stuffing my tip envelopes for the August trip. I’ve only done the Mousekeeping ones so far as money has been tight since before Christmas. OH, but look at what I had to buy for myself…

It was on sale and I loved, loved, loved this movie!!! My family watched it the other night. So awesome!

I also have that mini-weekend trip coming up in March for PlayList Live. Nope, no Disney parks, no Disney hotel, but Downtown Disney and viewing the Water Parade and Wishes from the Poly beach!!! We’ve never done this and heck, Peter and I don’t have to get up early to go to the parks, so why not?? I’ve never seen the Water Parade so that will be cool. I’m determined to get a little Disney thrown in there! I haven’t done tip envelopes for the March trip yet. Do I do Mousekeeping envelopes even if it’s not a Disney resort? I mean, I would leave a tip of course, but would they like Disney-ish envelopes? Anyone? I’m just not sure.

EGGCITING EGG EGDATE:
All of our hens are now laying. We have almost 2 dozen eggs now!! :hyper:

That’s my update for today. Worth the wait, huh? -----NOT!!!!

I am so sorry to hear of all the ER visits and sickies that have hit you guys! I'm glad you are feeling better now!

I laughed at the picture of cutie on top of Victoria in the chair! TOO CUTE!!! :lmao:

I wouldn't do a Disney-envelope for the tips, probably. YAY for DTD and fireworks from the beach! I LOVE that you are sneaking some Disney in your March trip too! :thumbsup2
