This next trip for us in September we'll be renting points for one night at AKL. What we paid was amazing. We're hoping to do a bounceback offer for next year when we're there. Hoping for 35% off deluxes so we can splurge. However, in thinking about how much we saved renting DVC points in wondering if that would be a better deal. What are the perks to booking non DVC and vice versa? Cons?

Do you mean that you would want to rent points to stay at a non-DVC deluxe resort? There are no pros, and the con is a big one - instead of saving money, you'll likely pay a lot more by renting points than you would with a regular cash reservation at Disney. The point costs for exchanges outside of DVC to the non-DVC resorts at WDW are astronomically high, sometimes several times what a comparable room at a DVC resort would be.

And anyway, I think the Yacht Club is the only deluxe at WDW that doesn't have an associated DVC resort at this point. You can stay in a DVC villa at GF, Poly, CR/BLT, VWL, BWV, BCV and AKV.

If your thinking you will get a bounce back from staying on rented points you will be disappointed. Staying at DVC there is no bounce back offers no matter how you booked.
The pros about renting is that its cheaper, the con is you are not in charge of your reservation. The other is most will want payment upfront for rentals, Going direct you will have a cancellation policy.

This is not accurate, there are usually bounce back offer cards in all the DVC rooms when they have a bounce back going on. Of course, then for the bounce back offer you would be booking through Disney and paying cash and I think the OP understood that. But you can totally do that.

I wasn't hoping to get a bounceback on DVC rooms. I was just wondering if it would make more sense financially to do a bounceback offer or rent DVC points.

You can look up prices and compare. For example the poly villas are $439 a night minus 35% would be $285. Renting points in September would be 16 points x$14=$224 for sun-thursday and then 19 points x $14=$266 for Fri/Sat. So a typical week would be $1652 renting vs $1995+tax with a 35% off deal. So you'd need to figure out if $400 is enough savings to have no control over the reservation and the need to pay in full at booking.
