Bought into DVC on our cruise. Buyer's remorse/panic?

As of now the Polynesian is easy to get at 7 months. So I wouldn't buy direct for the Poly either. Unless you always want to stay at the Polynesian during busy times and only want/need a studio.

Thanks. Feeling pretty foolish. I appreciate the honest advice everyone.
Do not feel foolish, you were smart enough to ask!

When I bought my first contract (Direct, VGF), I did not know better. I bought a marginal UY based on my travel habits(in my case a small mistake), and I should have bought a Fixed week, and did not (in retrospect, a kind of big mistake).

Had i asked here, I probably would have ended up with a better UY, and a Fixed week contract. NOT asking was foolish on my part.

Don't feel foolish. The salespeople are goood at their jobs. If DH were ever allowed to go to the DVC member events on his own on DCL we would have far more points. Thankfully he has Ms Cynical here to reign him in. Think of the Dis as your Ms/Mr Cynical. At least you asked here.

You somehow managed to talk them into selling you OKW, so you obviously have some research completed.

Good point. Many people can't convince their guides to sell them other resorts...

If you choose to rescind, you can just fax it in. I started another thread about the process. We found much better value in the resale market. The only pain is waiting for ROFR. Research more between OKW and SSR. We traded 50 direct Poly points for 150 SSR and pricing was within $2K.

Can we call and rescind? I'd like to ensure receipt and I wouldn't even know where to find a fax machine, heh.

They may make you fax. If you have an office store or a UPS store around, they usually have fax services, or you can use an email-to-fax service.

Fax: The 1980s wants its technology back!

Or you can go even older school and head to the Post Office...yes, that place with the Wanted Criminal Posters and Snail Mail. You'll send your recission via Certified Letter with the Return Receipt (Postcard) to verify that they received the letter. $6.50 range...

If you would like a letter template, just google it...or if you want mine, send me a PM and I'd be happy to provide the one that I used.

No reason to feel foolish. Our last time at WDW, we looked at DVC an were tempted. But we went back to our room that night and looked at option on the internet. You didn't have that option available to you.
You did however, raise the right questions when you got home and looked for answers. As everyone has suggested, rescind the offer now.
Do your research, give it some time and decide what is going to be right for you. Then you can go forward, and feel good about your decision this time.

Information will be in the paperwork you were given telling you exactly how to rescind.

Sorry, I think I'm still getting a grasp of all the common terminology. We bought direct from Disney, but it was a "used" contract at OKW, not a new one from like Poly or Aulani.
The Poly and Aulani contracts they are selling might also be "used" in the sense that they may be contracts Disney got back due to foreclosure or by exercising Right of First Refusal on a contract for sale on the resale market. No matter when or where or how someone purchases a Poly or Aulani contract, they get the same fixed contract end date as someone who purchased the day those resorts first went on sale. In other words, someone buying one of those resorts today does not get 50 years of ownership and does not get assigned a room that has never been slept in before. So that's why the terms "new" and "used" can be confusing and not really meaningful.

What does matter is if you buy "direct" (meaning from Disney) or "resale" (meaning from another member who is selling a contract, usually through a broker). You can save a significant amount of money by buying on the resale market. The process can take 3 to 4 months and you give up some perks that many of us feel do not offer good value anyway but you save a lot of money. I bought my first contract on the resale market because Disney did not have what I wanted in their inventory. I did add on a few other contracts directly from Disney when Disney's prices were much lower ($92/point) but I would not purchase directly from Disney again at their current prices.

And kudos to you OP for doing your homework!

Thanks again everyone. We officially faxed over our letter of cancellation. As per usual in most things Disney, they were super nice on the phone when they called to confirm our decision and explain the cancellation process.

Good job. Now do some more reading and get back to buying the DVC contract that will be right for you!

The smart move in my opinion. Now you can make a decision you are more comfortable with, even if it turns out to buy exactly what you just cancelled.

And possibly intimidate people with the Pirate get up :)

Good advice here from DisDadDVC. When DH and I were contemplating purchasing DVC, I spent a long time going through pages and pages of threads here on the DVC boards. Many questions come up again and again, for example you will find many threads that address topics such as "Help me understand Use Year", "Should I buy where I want to stay?", "How many points do I need?", "Why do people own at more than one resort?", "How long does it take to purchase on the resale market?", "Can you recommend a reputable resale broker?", etc.

If you cannot find a thread that answers a question you may have, just ask. There are lots of very knowledgeable and helpful people here. We were all newbies at one time and are happy to help.

FYI - The person who called you back wasn't the person who lost the commission so yes they were nice. The person who you bought from is your guide for life even when you buy resale so depending on the person, they may or may not mention something in the future.

But, there's also zero reason to talk to a guide unless you are buying. And, one can request a new guide at anytime. That should be a non-issue.
