I originally bought my round trip ticket to Barcelona with travelocity (at 90 days out) because it was cheaper than the airline. Today I happened to look at the airline (I know, why?) and the ticket is about 1/2 of what I paid for it.

Has anyone ever had any luck getting out of the first ticket with a refund and booked with the airline?

Should I just chalk it up as a fluke and be glad I didn't wait hoping this would happen and then find the fare doubled now?

It would be great to have the $600 to spend in Europe so if there is a chance I'd love to try.

TIA

Was the ticket you purchased non-refundable? Non-refundable does mean non-refundable. You might be able to get a credit for the difference, with restrictions, and perhaps after paying a change fee, but the whole point of non-refundable tickets is to ensure that you DON'T dump them for cheaper tickets if they come along later.

It never hurts to call the airline and check. You will most likely have to pay a change fee, but they may give you the difference (minus the change fee) in the form of credit to be used within 1 year. This has been my experience in the past...

You booked through travelocity. You said your fare, at the time, was cheaper then booking with the airline. Sounds like you got a consolidator fare. You probably have to call travelocity for any credit. It's worth a phone call but you probably will get the same answer as travelocity would have gotten if they called you and asked you to voluntarily pay more money for your ticket.

Makes sense.

I thought Travelocity has a guarantee that they have the lowest fare available and that they pay 150% of the difference you find a lower price, or is that Orbitz?

I don't remember which, but what they're guaranteeing is that it is the lowest fare available to them at the time the reservation is made.

Well, there's this:
What does the Travelocity Guarantee promise?
If you find a qualifying lower rate for travel booked with Travelocity within 24 hours of booking, we'll not only refund you the difference between what you paid and this lower price, but give you $50 off a purchase of future travel.

Even less of a guarantee. They're not actually guaranteeing it is the lowest fare -- just that you cannot find one lower.

Generally if you buy via a TA all changes must be made via that same TA UNTIL the airline takes over the reservation (which is generally at the time of the first flight.) So the OP would have to go thru Travelocity.

Now one of the reasons I don't use Travelocity, Orbitz or Expedia except in rare circumstances is that you are probably NOT going to get this credit. I rarely hear of any success in dealing with them to get credit if airfare drops. (Rare circumstances are things like my upcoming flight on Croatian Air... Trying to book on thier website was a nightmare LOL! I think the translations left out a few steps!)

Also, airlines often impose LARGE change fees on international. I had this mess happen to me a few years ago on DL and they wanted $200 to change the ticket!

Thanks for the responses - you all have the same thoughts I did. I'm going to try and if I susceed I get back to you.

Thanks again. I love the help you get on the DIS.
