both Dh and myself getting strange phone calls

If YOU call someone like your bank or credit card company using official numbers, they will tend to record calls, there is nothing wrong with that. The difference is you were the one initiating it.

oh my gosh-we are getting peppered to death with bogus scamming texts about tolls! we don't have toll roads or bridges anywhere near us-have not for going on 20 years. I think the bogus company name the texts use was originally driven by our cell's area code (cuz claimed it was San Francisco bay area system) but now it's toggling through different States and regions to see if we will bite.

Those Medicare wellness checks are a sketchy way for advantage plans to get more money from the government by "finding" more diagnosis . With Medicare Advantage plans, the plan gets paid for EACH diagnosis even if you aren't treating it. My plan which is regional and one of the best was teasing people with a $25 supermarket gift card for several years. I'll bet those stop pretty soon. I figure if I see MY doc on a regular basis, why do I want to see a stranger, no less let them in my home.

I realize the ones repeatedly calling are probably a scam. But the actual service set up properly thru Medicare health insurance can be an invaluable service. Both of my parents had chronic illnesses & severe mobility issues in the last few years of their lives. While we still took them to their primary physician for most appointments, there were a few times, especially in winter, that we appreciated being able to get a provider to come to the house, instead of needing two people to get them down the steps, into a wheelchair & down a steep sloped walkway & then into a large medical building & reverse all that to get them home.

I don't block anyone, I just won't answer the phone if I don't know who is calling. I always let it go to voicemail. If it is important they will tell you the details. If it is something that is possible then try and call them back, but not without some thought as to who is calling and why. Never call back any number that has not left a message or just one that makes no sense to you.
This is what I do, too. I don't have a cell phone, just a landline with answering machine, so I can screen calls as they come in. If I don't know the person or recognize the number, it goes to voice mail. I pick up or call back if it's important.

Thanks for the reminder about not saying yes.
Thanks PP with the how to for blocking.
The mistake I was making is I just tapped on where the phone number is and that’s when it would call back the number
I blocked the number so hopefully this is the end
Thanks

I find a lot of times the number is spoofed so blocking doesn’t do much good.
^^This. Blocking is of course the correct thing to try but don't be super-alarmed if it doesn't stop the calls as they will just switch to another number. You can tell if the number is fake if you try dialing it back and it can't be connected. Stay vigilant.

Don’t answer your phone unless you know who is calling or are expecting a call.
If it were only that simple. OP did mention about having some legitimate medical calls. The past 4 years I have discovered Doctors and other Medical providers often call from Blocked Numbers, and or they call from numbers that go right to voice mail. You can't let it go to voice mail because THEY don't answer and if someone does, it can take another day to get a call back to get the information you need. As others have posted, that is why I have kept my landline, I can screen calls and pickup so I don't have to play voicemail tag. However, it seems that many providers will dial a cell phone number instead of a landline if getting the option. Fortunately, many of my medical providers in their forms ask which number you prefer to be called on.

If it is legitimate you should be able to call the public number provided with a google search to the main business and ask them to look up why you have been called and go from there. This is how I weed out scammers, when there is no record of any calls I know it is a scam. Everything about us seems out and about and open on the dark web now according to my identity theft services. Based on age alone they can deduce social security and such.

Personally, I have been getting a ton of the toll ones lately and I discovered it was a big scam when I went to EZpass itself to pay and it was explained.

There is a scam operating all over the US that tries to coerce registered vehicle owners to pay nonexistent tolls, but the scammers running this one are a wee bit daft, as my folks would say.

My DS lives in the Tampa Bay area, so you would think that the toll they would claim he had neglected to pay would be on a Florida toll road. Nope; they sent him a fake bill for a toll on the Mass Turnpike. (He has never traveled anywhere in the US north of NYC.)
