Hi,
My son will be going with his Cub Scout troop for an overnight on the USS Salem in Quincy. DH will take him. The plan is for me to drive up with them and I'll take our DDs for a little overnight in Boston. If anyone knows of any hotels in the area or what there is to do, that would be great. I know Boston is awesome, but I know little about it geographically.

Thanks Pea! If we stay in Quincy, would Boston be a pain to drive into? Wait a second, isn't Boston always a pain to drive in?

Boston is a walking city. So I would suggest staying in the city and walk to the attractions or take the subway which is easy, too.

The commute from Qunicy to Boston can be traffic-filled on the SE Expressway depending on the time of day (even weekends). Parking can be expensive.

Um, yeah? :) Parking even more fun. Pretty sure the red line of the T goes to Quincy- I'd just take that.

As for what to do, how old are your DDs? Science Museum, CHildren's Museum, Aquarium, Duck Boat tour (though I saw they aren't able to go up the Charles River now due to bridge construction, so the water-portion is shorter right now. Don't know when you are going.) Walk the Freedom Trail. Go to Public Garden and ride the swan boats (must read Make Way for Ducklings first!) and then visit Mrs. Mallard and the ducklings' statues a little more into the park.

The Marriott in Quincy has a shuttle bus to the Quincy Adams T Station. You could stay there and just shoot in and out via the train.

Drive to Salem and see the Witch HOuse and all the other attractions. You can park there.

LOL, I don't mind it, but others are right - it would be a good idea to stay in Quincy and take the T into Boston. It's a quick ride and you'll be right in the heart of things without having to drive or pay to park, which can be ridiculous. The only thing is that it's not near the USS Salem, though (even though it's in the same city, it's a distance away).

That was my next question. On a map, the Marriott to the Salem didn't look bad. Reality anyone?

you could stay in Salem and take the commuter ferry over to Boston as well....?

You could easily stay in Quincy or Braintree, and have easy public transportation access to Boston. In fact, the shipyard where the USS Salem is berthed also has the Harbor Express which is a ferry that runs from Quincy to the Boston waterfront and Logan Airport. Might be a fun way to commute one day!

Thanks everyone. Also, someone suggested if I were still in the city after 9:00 - I should grab a cab back because the T wouldn't be safe. I'm always skeptical of that because people have mixed ideas of what is safe or not. Thoughts welcome again!

The T is relatively safe even after 9PM. While I don't recommend hanging out in a T station, they are monitored and as long as you are as aware as you would be just walking around the city you should be fine.

BTW - the USS Salem is docked nowhere near the actual city of Salem.

I've been on the T after 9 and has someone who does get alittle "worried" in shady situations and places, I can say that I thought it was fine. I think the Philly subway during the daytime is worse then the T at night:laughing:
