Borrowing Points

For those of you who bought into DVC directly from Disney and took advantage of the Magical Beginnings. Did you borrow points in order to go to WDW the first year? And if so did you ever regret borrowing these points?

I am trying to decide if we should plan a trip this summer or wait until next spring.

Thanks in advance.

a credit card ,you are only doing the same by borrowing pts.
I am a borrower ,live for the day

A year will come along over the course of the next 50 or so when you won't be able to go to WDW. At that point you will catch up on your borrowing. Even if you are able to go every year and not have any reason to skip a year, it would be like having SSR for 49 years instead of 50. I don't like to borrow points much but I think getting the MB is the best excuse to borrow now. At some point you will most likely catch up.

We started borrowing with OKW in the early 90's when passes came with the ressie and have continued to do so - we'll let the kids fight over that final year with no points available!!

I did not use MB. I stayed a few months after I purchased, the week BCV opened in July 2002. I did borrow last year so while I stayed in a OKW 2-bedroom, my parents could stay in a studio two doors down. I have not regretted it.::MickeyMo

Philosophically, you need to decide if borrowing is something you are comfortable with or not.

I think Magical Beginnings is GREAT for those who buy while at (or shortly after returning from) WDW. They've just gotten that trip under their belts and can probably wait a year before returning.

Others just have to make the same tough decision as you.

We only purchased 150 points, and I'm comfortable borrowing to the point that we will not have to worry about banking points. In other words, if we are planning a stay and have enough points for 3 nights with 10 pts left over, I have no qualms about borrowing a few points to make it a 4-night stay.

Of course we haven't been members all that long, so it's hard telling what extremes I might go to if a conference or work travel steers me toward Orlando for a couple of days unexpectedly. :)

Discuss the reality of the situation with your family and make a group decision. Continuously borrowing leaves you with less flexibility. If you were to have to cancel a trip, you cannot bank borrowed points. And you'll have nothing in reserve (so to speak) if an unexpected Disney opportunity may present itself.

Thank you everyone for your wonderful replies. :earsboy: We went ahead and took the plunge and borrowed 120 points in order to stay at SSR the week of Thanksgiving. I am really excited about the trip. The only draw back is that we have a March use year so if we have to cancel the trip it will be a very quick turn around to reschedule in order not to loose the points. However, as many Disney fans as we have in our families I am sure we could find a good way to make use of the points in order not to loose them.

If you plan your yearly trips to be less than your allotment of points - you'll be caught up in no time!
