Borrowing points, then cancelling reservation

I have an Oct UY. Hoping to book a trip for late Aug 2010. By that time all of my 2009 points will have been used up, so in order to book it on points I'd have to borrow from my 2010 points.

If I do that, book an Aug 2010 trip, but then have to cancel - do I have to use my 2010 points by Oct 1, 2010 or else risk losing them? I know that if I borrow points, I can't put them back in the original year right?

Afraid so, October use years stink when trying to plan a late summer trip especially if you have to cancel.

As the others have posted, yes.

But Sammie said it best, LOL. Even if you had 2009 points left to book the trip, you'd lose the points if you canceled after May 31, 2010 (your banking deadline) and couldn't use the points by 10/1/2010.
