Here is the scenario:

I am looking to purchase a contract with a March Use Year. We typically vacation in May.

For points with a March Use Year, if I decide in Oct 2011 (when the 7 month booking window for May opens) to borrow from my 2012 points, do the points expire as of March 2012 or March 2013?

Obviously I would need the borrowed points to still be valid through their original use year for a March Use Year contract to work for me.

So the question: do borrowed points keep their original expiration date (in this case March 2013) or do they take on the expiration date of the year into which they are borrowed (in this case, March 2012)?

TIA!:)

Banked and Borrowed points will have to be used during the use year they are moved into or they will be lost. If you were to borrow March 2013 UY points into a March 2012 UY, those points would have to be used by Feb 28 2013 or they would be lost.

Do you mean April 30, 2013, or Feb 28, 2013?

I assumed points were valid for 12 months? :confused3

use year has nothing to do with when you call to book. nothing at all.

if you call in oct 2011 to book may 2012 - then may 2012 is in your 2012 use year (which runs from mar 1, 2012 to feb 28, 2013). you could book may 2012 with banked 2011 pts, current 2012 pts (doesn't matter if you call in oct 2011 - they are still current 2012 pts) and/or borrowed 2013 pts.

if you borrow pts from march 2013 for a may 2012 stay, they will expire on feb 28, 2013.

banking and borrowing are FINAL transactions. you may not put them back into their original use year - the pts will expire at the end of their new use year.

Thank you so, so much! I finally get it!

I was just about to cancel any thought of buying into DVC, thinking this was really too restrictive. I completely get it now. Thank you!:goodvibes

Borrowed points take on the expiration date of the year into which they are borrowed

When I joined, what made it the easiest for me to remember what I could use for which trips was to first determine which UY my trip would fall.

Once I knew this, I knew I could "pay" for it for with banked points from the previous UY, current UY points, and borrow from the next UY.

When I called didn't matter (11 months prior to check in date for my home resort and 7 months prior for all others), but when I traveled did.

you're welcome.

lots of people get confused about "use year." here is a helpful thread with more detail if you need it:

Thanks so much. It is funny...I initially had the correct idea about how Use Years work, but I have been studying this stuff so much over the last week that I started to get fuzzy about it. Finally now I think I have it!:goodvibes

gotcha! Thanks!:)

That is a great way to keep things straight. I am now finally on the same page. Thanks so much to all the wonderful Disers...(and hopefully my soon-to-be fellow DVCers!;))

Use year can be a headache. We have an Oct., travely almost always in June July and August and can not bank after May 31 thanks to the change of banking 4 months prior.

I like the old way better where you could at least bank a percentage of your points, but according to Jim Lewis we were not smart enough to keep that straight, funny people did it for years before he came along. :confused3
