Borrowing more than 50% of points

Hello,

I was just on the phone with member services and was looking to plan a trip in November at my home resort. Currently (and I know this has been the case for a while), members are only allowed to borrow up to 50% of there points. My questions are:

1. Will this ever be lifted or is this the new borrowing rule?
2. Has anyone been able to borrow more than 50% in the past even with this restriction?

I apologize if these questions have been asked in the past and thank you for your help.

1. No one knows. It does not have to be lifted.
2. Yes but you cannot count on it.

Thanks. I am not counting on it, but didn't know if it was worth the try or a lost cause.

I have heard that a few owners were given permission to borrow when it was a few extra points they were short...so, if one was short like 5 to 10 points, supervisors allowed the reservation to be made. But, have not read here any reports of owners being given permission to borrow a lot above the 50% rule.

In terms of it staying, as someone mentioned, no one knows, but they are allowed to leave it in place for however long they want, and even make it permanent if they decided to. IMO, I don't see it being that way, but given how things are still shaking out, I do not see it being removed before 2023 now...at one point, I though we could see it revert back mid 2022. I'd love to be wrong!!!

Thanks, If I borrow the 50% I am 1 point shy of the reservation. I am going to try to call Member Services later today and see if they will allow me that extra 1 point. I think last year, my wife and I were hopeful the 50% limitation would be lifted by now. With how things are going though I think your assessment of it not being lifted until 2023 at the earliest is dead on. I hope sooner, and really hope this is not a permanent thing. We love to bring friends and family who may not be able to afford an entire trip and this limitation severely hurts in our effort to help family and friends.

Thank you for your insight and fingers crossed some of these limitations get lifted soon so we can all go back to enjoying Disney the way we like to.

If your within the 7months, you can call and buy the one point needed,,,I think it is $19per point

I believe they will return to being able to borrow 100% as soon as possible because helps with the marketing of selling new points.

I am sure DVD wants to but DVCM has to make sure the system is balanced and they have to not change it in such a way that it causes too many points in the current calendar year.

Disney have done a great job in helping people impacted by Covid and the 50% rule was introduced to help them do this. 2022 should be the last year impacted and going forward no reason to think that this restriction will continue longer term.

I'm frustrated with this rule. I understand why they did it but the restriction applies to every reservation - not just DVC resorts. I'd love to borrow some points to use at one of the DLR hotels but they won't let me do it. (Rant over.)

When they first changed this rule I was thinking we might see the rule changed back in 2023, but with February marking the 11 month mark....I don't think it's going to happen. I would love to know how much the borrowing restrictions have caused people to purchase add-ons.

I was looking at adding on the minimum because of this, but can not bring myself to do it. I am sure others have. I plan to add on more at some point but I would rather do it on my terms versus being to hasty.

Count me in with the I would have expected it to revert already. They were closed until July 2020. Wouldn't all the points they allowed to be banked have expired in 2021? Or were they allowed to be delayed into 2022 for international owners?

Basically I would expect it to return once all the points that were allowed to be pushed have been cleared out of the system,

I think because there are still travel concerns, banking may be happening at a higher rate than was normal still.

The extension for international were DVDs own points so that didn’t really add to the system, just shifted who got to use them.

So, it could be they still feel it is unbalanced

That makes sense. Either way, I BELIEVE (and as mentioned, no one really knows other than Disney and they probably do not either) that they will remove the restriction once the points have balanced out. WHEN that happens is another question.

But the offset to higher than normal banking is to allow more borrowing, not less which keeps more points further out.

I wish they would start getting creative with the points glut. Cruise ships are running half empty, so let members book them at reduced points cost. Let white cards book Galactic Starcruiser. Stuff like that. The problem isn't going to solve itself. The only way points clear the system when whole resorts were closed for a period of time is if you give members a way to "spend" their points on non-villa experiences.

That's going to prolong the problem. If all travel concerns vanished tomorrow, the demand for reservations from the glut of banked points is going to mean no availability. If there's no availability, people aren't going to be able to get reservations even when they WANT to travel... which means they're going to bank at a higher rate than normal, and the cycle continues.

I know I am the minority, but I am a little happy about the restriction. I was ALWAYS one year behind.
I have never left a point on the table since we purchased in 2009 but ALWAYS borrowing LOL
Now, I'm just missing half of my following UY LOL
I have excellent self control, eat well, gym, etc in life, but I cannot at all, contain myself for longer stays and/or
bigger accommodations having those extra points to borrow LOL

Disney doesn't know this "reduced cost" term you speak of haha.
