Borrowing before reservations?

Do you literally have to borrow the points and have them in your account before you can call and make a reservation (that would of course use those borrowed points)? I'm just worried that I would borrow the points and then maybe not be able to get the reservation I wanted, in which case I would be stuck with the borrowed points. I wasn't sure if the borrowing could be done on the phone while making a reservation, or maybe it could be done anytime before the actual trip. Thanks!

When you call Member Services to make the reservation, if you need any points borrowed, they will borrow them at the time the reservation is made. You do not have to borrow the points before making the reservation.

But, do they become borrowed points at the time of the reservation, meaning if you cancel your trip do they remain borrowed points?

Yes -- a borrowing transaction is irreversible. The points permanently change use year and can NOT be banked for use in their original year.

To clarify -

The only time you can borrow points is when you are making the reservation that will use the borrowed points. You cannot borrow ahead of time.

Yes, so once you book that reservation, you will have to use those points. Now, if you cancel a trip with current UY and borrowed points and are still in your banking window, you can bank the current UY points and then just use up the borrowed points.

This is one reason why I wanted to have a UY that is right before we travel. At least if I ever book a trip with borrowed points, and have to cancel it, I will have the remainder of my UY to use them.

I travel in July/August and I originally got an Oct UY. That meant that if one of those trips changed or cancelled, it would leave me only September to use up the points. Since I am a teacher, that is not possible. Now I have June (selling the Oct UY contract) and I am much happier!

Thanks for the clarification. Realistically, we would not cancel a trip unless there were extreme circumstances. Since we fly and I do not buy insurance, I would still loose part of the airfare, unless we flew on Southwest. I just wish Southwest would publish their schedule more than six months in advance.

Just remember, you do not have to have the points borrowed for the date you are making the reservation, as long as they will be current at the time you actually stay in the villa. (For example, lets say you have an October UY and all of your current (2008) points are gone - but all of your 2009 points will be available in October. You call now to book a May 2010 reservation. You do not need to borrow to make this reservation since the points will be available at the time you check in.) This is a common misunderstanding.
