In a few days, I am planning to book my home resort for 5 nights in October, 2010, and am trying to make sure that I understand borrowing points from another year.

Our use year is October, 2010, and we currently have only 21 points remaining so we will need to borrow a lot of points from 2011 in order to book this October 2010 trip. First, I’m getting confused…can I borrow from 2011 this far in advance?

Assuming I can borrow the points and book this October 2010 trip, what happens if I have to cancel the trip? Can I bank these points and by when do I need to bank them?

With banked points, when will I need to use them by so I don’t lose them? We were planning to skip Disney in 2011.

Your date of stay is in your 2010 use year, so you can borrow 2011. Once you borrow them from 2011 into 2010, they will remain in your 2010 use year. If you would cancel, those points would have to be used by the end of your 2010 use year, which would be 9/30/2011. They cannot be banked. You could bank the 21 2010 points, you would need to do that by 5/31/2011.

Why can the 21 points be banked and not the points borrowed from 2011? I understood that the 2011 points would then become 2010 points but why can't you then bank them? Is this correct?:confused3

Borrowed points cannot be banked - only current points may be banked. Borrowed and/or banked points cannot be returned to their original Use Year - thus the points you need to borrow from 2011 must remain in the 2010 Use Year once they have been borrowed to make that reservation.

Not what I wanted to hear but thanks for the replies. DH and I will have to give this some thought.

you can bank or borrow pts one time and one time only. then they will expire in the use year they were banked or borrowed into.

the 2011 pts do not become "current 2010 pts" - they are still "borrowed 2011 pts" which are valid for stays in your 2010 use year.

That's why you only borrow the exact number of points you need for your reservation.

I knew you can only bank once a year, but I thought you could borrow as many times as you want (as long as you have the points available)?

You can bank as often as you'd like - subject to the 8 month deadline for banking points (no points may be banked during the last 4 months of your Use Year). The only limitation is the number of points available to be banked from the current Use Year.

Borrowing may be done as often as you'd like - except that you can only borrow points when you are actually making a reservation, so the number of points is limited to the number of points available in the Use Year following the dates of the reservation you are making. You cannot borrow points "just to have them available" - they can only be borrowed while making a reservation.

when you bank or borrow pts, those pts are stuck in the use year that they were banked or borrowed into. (i.e. you can't bank pts into 2010 then bank them again into 2011. you can't borrow 2011 pts into 2010 then bank them back into 2011. you can't borrow 2011 pts into 2010 then borrow them again into 2009. for those pts, it's one-and-done.)

i wasn't saying that you could only bank or borrow one time per year. sorry for the miscommunication.
