I know you guys on this board will be able to answer this. If I borrow points from 2007 for a 2006 trip and then have to cancel, what happens to the borrowed points? I would cancel before 31 days. Would the borrowed points go back to 2007 or would i have to use them before my next use year?

Also, if i reserved a 2 bedroom and then found out that our friends can't go would I still be able to keep the 1 bedroom part of the reservation or would I have to start the reservation process all over again?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Borrowed points will remain in the year into which they were borrowed and will expire if not used. This is true even if cancelled more than 30 days before arrival. 30 days or less will put them in the Holding Account- but they will still expire at the end of that Use Year. Points borrowed from 2007 will not be returned to that Use Year.

If you want to change from a 2BR to a 1BR, it will be a new reservation. If there is no wait list for your dates, you should be fine- but otherwise, you might have to waitlist yourself if you cancel yoru 2BR reservation.

In many cases, you will have reserved a dedicated 2BR- so there may not be a lock-off 1BR available. Be sure the 1BR is available before cancelling the 2BR or you could risk not having any reservation.

Good luck!

You could reserve a 1 bedroom and a studio. And if you don't need the studio, you could cancel with no worriying over the 1 bedroom. This would be a few more points, but if you think your guests may not be too predictable it would give you piece of mind. Also, if you still have enough points in the 2006 use year for the studio, canceling and banking would still be an option. Make sure to tell MS what you are trying to accomplish, so they make the 1 bedroom ressie with borrowed 2007 points and the studio with 2006 points.

We have done this exact scenario and actually had to canel the studio because guests backed out around 90 days out!

Seems to me that if you do this, you run the risk of not having the 1 bedroom and studio next to each other. Wouldn't this be a request and not a guarantee?

I wonder how many expired points or "distressed" points appearing on the rent/trade board are the result of friends/family backing out?

You can't just drop a portion of the 2 BR even if you have a lockoff reserved. They used to do this but not longer because it's not fair to those trying to book after you. You'd have to cancel then rebook. As Doc points out it can work out if the days are available and you can wait list if need be. You can book two separate units but no way to guarantee they are together plus it's really a pretty good amount more. Of course you could cancel and rebook a 2 BR and recover the extra points if available and appropriate. Even if you did this inside the 31 day window, better to have extra holding account points than none at all. It all boils down to the choices you want to make and the chances you want to take. Of course you could book both the 2 BR and 1 BR if you wanted but it'd take more points and you're already talking about borrowing points and the risk of losing them.

Points borrowed are put into the current year, never to return to the following year. they have to be used in the current use year. If cancelation takes place under 31 days they go into holding and have to be used in the current year but cannot be used to book more than 60 days out from check-in. Also when you get within 60 days from end of use year they can only be used to book DVC.(or is it 30? can someone verify, the old brain cells seem to be slipping today.)

It's 60 days.

The 60 day rule: During the last 60 days of your use year, you cannot book a non-DVC resort stay that also occurs during the last 60 days of your use year.
