Borrow Points Or Pay Cash

Okay, DVC experts....I need advice!! I am torn between borrowing all of my points from next year to be able to take my parents down with us in March, or to pay cash for the difference and keep all of our points for next year. Somehow I can't bear the thought of not having any points next year. What do most of you do? Borrow, and deal with the deficit next time? Or pay cash now and have points available next year? Thanks!!

I personally would borrow. Seize the day!

I was reluctant to borrow at first, or stay weekends, but now I use my points for the now! If you ever get into a situation where you dont have points to use next year or the year after, then use cash or use the cash to add on.

I use current points, then borrow points, then cash. I have not had to use cash yet. If you need points next year, borrow again!

It is such a blessing to be able to travel with parents to WDW and a worthy use of points, even borrowed points. :wizard:

Up until recently, we were ALWAYS borrowing!! We never had current year's points available, then we bought more points! There's nothing wrong with borrowing, it means none of your points will expire. Next year, you'll just borrow from the next year... :)
As for cash ressies, we have done those, too, only if there is a member discount.

I agree. I paid for DVC to cover my accommodations. If that means I have to borrow from the next use year, so be it. If you find you are constantly in a borrowed state, that's still okay, because then you wont lose out in the final year! :teeth: If you find even with borrowing you don't ever have enough, then I would add on.

I have paid cash for a weekend night rather than borrowing points. Paying $320 cash instead of using 48 points (1 bedroom OKW May) seemed reasonable.

Unlike borrowing money, borrowing points costs nothing. The worst that can happen if you borrow every year until your contract ends is that you will run out of points 1 year before your contract ends.

Borrow. You're going to take your parents to DVC. They're going to love it and buy their own points. Then the next year they're going book a trip for everyone on their points and you won't even need your points that year. You'll be back in balance. :teacher:

ITA :thumbsup2
I don't get to travel with parents(mother is 92 and doesn't get out much these days-her choice) but traveling with grown children is in the same category for me these days. - yes they still want to go to Disney with Mom & Dad- this year I am lucky enough to be traveling with DD-39 DSD 32(she's the real Disney nut)DS 20- DGD20 -DGSs 4yo and 16mo and possibly DS 36 and DGS 6mo over two trips as well as their assorted husband wives etc. I have used banked, this years and borrowed points for these trips and we are even staying over a weekend for the first one. At one point I started to have a panic attack that I would have no points for a couple of years and then realized the whole borrowing thing can work for me if I'm careful and especially since I will be 99 when those OKW and BCV contracts expire (don't want any points sitting around at that point). Take your parents - use your points and cherish the memories you will have.

I would say it depends on what cash rate you can get. If it's less than the going rental rate, borrow. If not, transfer (if you can) or rent points.

Thank you all...I took your advice and called today to borrow the points.....I feel great about the decision, we can just borrow again next year!! My parents will love coming with us and my 2 DD's (2 and 4) willl love having their grandparents...

A serial borrower here...and proud of it! Works just fine to stretch a small contract! have a wonderful trip.

I would pay cash, then you can still feel comfortable that you have points. We were in that situation and the solution for us was to buy more points.....carefull, it can be addicting!!!!! We started with 210 and maxed out at 600!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have been going for 12 years, and the memories we have with friends and family are soooooo worth it. Good luck with your decision.
