Why is it whenever I travel, weird things happen? This week I am in San Francisco at a Java Developers conference which in and of itself is strange since I don't even drink coffee. Well I left Saturday and my flight was delayed for 2 hours in Costa Rica. I am still not sure I understand how a flight from Phoenix to San Francisco was delayed due to weather in Costa Rica but I was willing to let that slide. When I finally get to San Francisco I find out that my conference registration was messed up and I was only enrolled for 1 out of 5 days. I didn't worry too much about that though since the Oakland A's are in town I figured I would just go to a bunch of ballgames. That was of course until I checked in to my hotel and found out that the place I was staying was the parade headquarters for the Gay Pride Parade scheduled for June 27. Well I am a pretty happy guy so I figured that seeing other happy people in a parade would be cool. Besides I like the floats and the horses in parades so that should be all ok. Well I went down the morning of the parade and it was not anything like I had expected. There were no floats and no horses although there were a lot of signs talking about riding but I have no idea what that meant. The conference is like Disneyland for propeller heads. And if you don't believe me, I have proof. I met a geek from Walt Disney World IT and he even had a Mickey Mouse lanyard. I asked him if he had any pins but he just looked blankly at me. What is up with that? I did trade for 2 Java pins though so it hasn't been a complete waste.

Yeah but have you gotten a chance to play air hockey yet?? :)

Update from JavaOne. Still no coffee but lots of guys with pocket protectors, multiple cell phones, pagers, PDA. Odd fashion note, these guys all seem to have only one shirt which is both day and night ware (based on the condition of the shirt. I have no actual knowledge of their sleeping attire. As I am in San Francisco and after the parade I really must stress this point). eBay is here working with Sun to sell their equipment for mega cheap. As part of the show they have auctions for prizes. The first day I saw a robot go for $2,000 which freaked me out. Then I spent $2,100 dollars for a varsity jacket (not to self, next time when you tell Trina about things like this preface that you bought it with play money not real money -- it will save you 45 minutes of lectures about budgets and family insanity). By the last auction, T-shirts and hats were going for $11,000. It was like bidding against the Rain Man. I tried to buy a digital camera but I didn't have $30,000 so I lost out. I was able to obtain a few Java pins though so if anyone wants to trade, please let me know.
