Over 3 pregnancies in 4 years I put on 80 pounds...but I NEVER believed that it was what God designed for me. I did not believe that God would be pleased with how my temple had become flabby and not highly useful for His work.

Just a quick note-has God ever told you he thought you were fat? Does being overweight stop you from praising, worshipping and loving Him?
Who says you are fat? Hollywood? Calista Flockhart? Nicole Ritchie? Laura Flynn Boyle?

I learned something this week from my 10 year old daughter. I was talking about wanting to lose 10 lbs. She asked me why. I said to look better. She said for who?? I started thinking. Who did I want to lose weight for? My kids and hubby are happy with my size. I just wanted to look good for a reunion. For the skinny moms in our school. To look better then the overweight ones. To be able to wear cooler skinny clothes. I wasn't doing it for God at all. When God tells me he is unhappy with my extra 10 lbs then I will worry about it. (what a relief!)
In the early days, being chubby was how women were supposed to look, they were considered healthy looking. If you were big, it meant you were well-to-do because you could afford good food. When did this change? We are all so busy trying to look good for the world....

*I think you need to be healthy, able to play with your kids, able to keep your house clean, able to volunteer for Gods work (vbs, sunday school etc.) When you can't do those things (because of weight)-that is when you aren't doing what pleases God.

Just my opinion, but I hate to see women always beating themselves up over their weight. If God is happy, that is the only person you should be worried about pleasing! :goodvibes

Hound-congrats on being able to do the Walk to Emmaus-I have never heard of it, sounds cool!!

Rick-Welcome, nice to see you popping in, you are welcome here.

Someone asked about good reading a few pages back, don't remember who. My favorite Author is Karen Kingsbury. She is sooooo good. Have a kleenex ready though. She really makes you think about your walk with God. She has great characters. Highly recommend her!!

Also agree about letting the Gay Issue rest for awhile (at least a few pages!!)

Have a good day! :lovestruc

For them he is a very holy prophet. We say "son of God" - what does that mean anyway? He's not a son in the same sense that we are.

I think sometimes we are really saying much the same thing but using different words.

Right, but that is my point. Jesus himself said he wasn't a prophet. He was the fulfillment of the prophets. I am not saying this well as I am not even close to a Biblical scholar, but it still just doesn't seem to mesh for me. Either he was what he said, which is not accepted in Islam, or he was a major liar and fraud. I just can't see how one could make it go both ways. Anway.....

As for not standing up on the other thread and saying that the things in the essay are wrong, I personally am learning my limits on the DIS board. While in real life I will say that I think treating any human being like less than a human is wrong and immoral, I know that I would not be good at debating these types of issues on here. I also, know that I do not know all sides of political issues and am on the naive side. So, for that and other reasons, I choose not to get involved. Does that mean I don't care about what is really happening? No, just means that for me, this is not the forum for it. i think people choosing to participate or not is not indicative of whether or not the truly care about an issue.

auntpolly....I don't think the "we" are kicking their Bibles around...did God not kick the stew out of that Golden Calf? There are no other Bibles that are "Bibles" other than the one true word of God. I can see folks at the Mount saying, "well, why don't we let them have their cow...aren't we supposed to love those around us..and wouldn't it be unloving to tell them they have to get rid of their cow?" I'm not even proposing we tell them to get rid of their Bible, their Koran does not say that suicide will be rewarded...it's the extreme Islamists who are not following the word of their "Bible" but yet following the words of extremist leaders who have a vision of a world that will be 100% Islam..they feel they are commanded by their "Bible" to extinguish all believers that will not or do not convert. So, at that point, I clearly see a need to stand up for our Bible and the one true God. God is a jealous God, he says so. Jesus was not "loving" to the moneychangers at the temple...he STOOD UP and made them aware of their wrongdoing...I think that is loving.

Tara

I think that I would have to disagree.

I have not even looked at that other thread... But, I felt compelled to answer this post. God, clearly, commands us to turn the other cheek, to love our neighbors, etc...

Sure, God did the things mentioned... He is God.... He, and only He, has the right to 'Stand' up and deliver judgement. Only God.

I am thinking that the actions mentioned in the other thread are actions taken out of fear, and hatred, and aggression... Things that are clearly not Christian.

While I do feel that it is sometimes necessary for us, as Human Beings (not necessarily as 'Christians') to defend ourselves, and to provide for ourselves. I am not so sure that we are commanded to take offensive actions as Christians. We are commanded to wear the defensive armour of God, but very rarely have men been called upon by God to take offensive, or adversarial, action as 'Christians'.

If this were so, then we would be no better than the terrorist.

Just who's 'interpretation' of the Bible do we defend???
How far do we go in this battle???
How do the actions mentioned in the other thread qualify as 'defending' the Bible, or the Lord???

I thank God that he has made himself known to me, and that I am a born again Christian, and that I know that the battle is His.

And, in the end, GOD will be victorious!!!

Every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Don't I just LOVE you!! :) No way, no how does being overweight stop me from praising and worshipping and loving my Lord!!! And, you are soo correct that our society's images of what beauty is are so far gone that we have shows where people get 10's of thousands of surgical procedures to fit a certain image. I don't think Mother Teresa was especially fetching..but oh my goodness..what she used her vessel for made her GORGEOUS!!!
I dislike when a sin is passed off as not a sin because they believe they were "made" that way. Yes, in some ways you could say that I was "made" obese by a long line of low hypothyroidism in my genetics but does that mean that eating more than my body can handle is a wise and prudent way to honor my vessel? I rely on the Word to direct and guide me...and it clearly states that laziness and gluttony are not what God had planned for us. I call it like I see it in my book, and I just ate poorly and didn't get out there and walk when I should have. I now walk 26 miles a week and those miles are my quiet time with the Lord and I can't tell you how they have blessed me physically and spiritually. For ten years I held on to the weight and I loved the Lord just as much then as I do now...I just have more energy to get His work done.

So I hope I didn't imply that being overweight limits your love for God or Him for you...just that in all areas of our lives we should strive to follow His word and through that we are blessed.

Thanks for the pep talk!! I love a good pat on the back! :)

Thanks, Albertan mom and Imhall2000! So many women struggle with weight and need to look at it on these terms! It's very uplifting to read your thoughts on the weight issue, and it inspires me to remember my body is a temple.

You know what guys? I am really upset and need some reinforcements here. I had answered a question a long time ago on the raising children w/o a church thread and so now have been getting updates since it resurfaced. Here is what I want to know--why is it okay to discriminate and name call Christians and no one else? There is one post on there--among several calling Christians "brainwashed sheep" I even reported this post as it is insulting and beyond rude. Nothing has been done. It's still there. Now, if any other group were referenced there--minorities of any color, any other faiths etc, that post and others like it would be gone, but apparently it is okay because it is just Christian bashing and it's alright to call us insulting names. What is up with that?

I am close to leaving the DIS boards over this stuff. Tolerance is a two way street and the intollerance being thrown at Christians around here is just about too much. Makes me really sad.

There is not only Christian bashing on this board. There is also Muslim/Arabic/Middle Eastern bashing. But that seems to be okay because there aren't many of us around. And yes, I too, have thought about staying away, but I do have friends on the CB who I would miss.

I do agree that some people cross that line into bashing Christians, and it does seem to be more acceptable on these boards sometimes than saying disparaging remarks about other groups, but that thread is locked now, so the mods must have agreed that there was some nasty things being said. I would like to say that most of the "non-Christian" people on this board though are very respectful, and though they may not agree with Christian beliefs, they do not bash.

Dysney mom , this thread has been closed. I participate on that thread , toward the end of it , and , you probaly know that I stand on the other side of the fence religion wise , from you , but I tried to keep thing civil , and tried to have some people not to speak so harshly. But there was so much I could do.

I dont think you should leave the Dish , I am sure there are a lot of people who share your view , and some that , like me like to discuss the subject respectfully.

Miss Jasmine--you are right. There is too high of a tolerance of that too.

I had not seen that the thread was locked. I feel a bit better about the responsiveness at this point.

toto2--I did see your posts on there and yes, I think you were always respectful as were many others. I appreciate your coming on here to say that. I have no problem with discussion and differing views, but my problems arise when people practically out and out call me (and others who believe as I do)an idiot. (Which you did not do at all, but others did.)

Thanks for the quick response guys. I was just feeling the attack from opposing forces a bit too strongly. And yes, there are many many kind and respectful people on here which is why my husband thinks I do nothing but sit on the DIS all day!

I know how hard it is Disneymom.

I was here about 2 weeks and got into a big debate over same sex marriage. One poster told me I was a psycho and should have my children taken away. :guilty: I went to bed crying that night.
Presently I am in a big debate on the Abortion thread. I was told I had half a brain, and worse.

Sometimes I see a thread that I don't agree with, but I am just not in the mood to get beat on, so I ignore it. Other times I get involved. You can't leave because of what people say. I know it is hard. I was ready to leave, then I got a few encouraging pm's. That always helps! I got one last night from a person telling me that it was nice that I could be the voice for pro-lifers, because she was too afraid to get flamed, and have people hating her. I chose to get involved in the pro-life argument, because those babies can't defend themselves.
As one pm to me said "These boards are full of anti-Christians, who don't like being told they are wrong"
I found that to be very true!!
But there are many of us on here who are Christians, and we support you!
Dont go because of a few bad comments. (I would have been gone a long time ago!!)
There are lots of good things on here too! :teeth:

Disneymom3, I went and read over the last six or seven pages of the now locked thread. I think the "brain-washed" comment was made because of one certain Christian poster who rubs people the wrong way. Don't go away, most people are nice here (and sometimes the nice ones have bad days). :goodvibes

When the topic of Christianity comes up in discussing certain issues and I see certain posters, I quickly skip over their posts. I now have put one poster on "ignore."

It's just not worth the aggravation to here again and again that:

a) all religion is nonsense, or

b) the Bible is a bunch of moralistic fairy tales (or worse)

c) any criticism Christians make is "judging people" and is therefore taboo.

d) if your beliefs (or morals) are based on God, they don't count -- "you're forcing religion down our throats."

I am really too much of a cup half full person....one of my favorite sayings is..."You can find the good in anybody, or atleast a good trait...look at the devil..you can certainly say he's a hard worker!" And I think when you're dealing with a public domain...you've got the "public"...and as Christians you are reminded that you will be persecuted...gee, poor Paul! But it also says you should find joy in such persecution because God will carry you through it and let His Will is done.

I've said before that I kind of like the ones that are so blatantly against Christians..because I specifically have a moniker to pray for. It's those out there that are quiet but harbor those sentiments privately that concern me more. So, to take from the Pollyanna Glad Game...be glad you know who the folks are you need to pray for. Now, some people get nauseous at my neverending optimism...maybe that's why God led me to marry a pessimist...somewhere within lies the truth! :)

We sound like twins seperated at birth.....!!

I like to look for the good in everyone, thats why these boards are hard. Sometimes all you see is the bitterness, misery and criticism....

(I married a pessimist too!)

I agree-it does get tiring....
Thank the Lord for this thread, where (most of the time!) you can come and talk with like-minded people!!

Now about Desperate Housewives..... Just kidding!! Kidding!! Please, no debates!!

For me, it is when food and eating and loving food comes before my time with God. I may eat when I'm not even hungry and instead that should be spent doing something else. Or sometimes I'll sit and snack on popcorn and watch mindless TV when I should be spending that time with God. I realize I am hard on myself about this but for whatever reason, I have a problem with food and tend to fill myself with it instead of God's Word. (You know the verse, "Taste and see that the Lord is good" ) I'm probably 20 lbs. heavier than I would like to be. But the weight isn't the issue for me--it is because there is a direct parallel between how I treat food and how I treat God. I believe with all my heart that God made our bodies in a way that they can tell us when they are hungry and when they aren't. I just don't always listen.

I think I've read a lot of "bashing" on these boards: Muslims, Christians, Catholics (I know they are Christian but they really get bashed around here), value resort lovers, concierge lovers, refillable mug lovers...

The only thing were all safe on is Walt Disney. Most everyone loves the World and Lands he designed for us to enjoy. :) That is the one thing 99.9% of us agree with. (Except Papa Duece. He's admitted to not really liking WDW. He'll come around though. Those girls of his are still young!! :teeth: )

Buckalew11, you made some good points there...
Albertan Mom, I'll be looking for the abortion thread tonight,
P.S. Please don't leave ...

I've enjoyed reading everyone's comments, BTW,
but thought I'd chime in on the Christian comments discussion.
I can't count the names I/We've been called on virtually every
thread that even comes close to mentioning what a person believes.
I try to let it be like water off a duck, because I know immediately
when I open a thread (let alone post on it) what the names will start off as,
and the longer the thread the worse the names become.
And yes, there are the "usual suspects" that can be expected to start
off with guns blazing.
My personal favorite is one guy
(who regularly posts with such incredible anger)
who's pet name for all of us is "Right-Wing Nutbar" - no matter who
he's talking about (could be one of us here, could be someone in the media).
He usually winds up shortening his name-calling to simply "Nutbar"
after his first couple of posts, but that always winds up
making me crave an Almond Joy or something!

Sometimes when I venture onto those threads
I just decide that discretion is the better part of valor
- at least for me that night - and I refrain from posting anything.

It always makes me think of what my pastor says,
"What are you complaining about?
They're only doing what they're supposed to!
Didn't some/most of us do that before we understood the Truth?"

Blessings to all...
