Here is another that I've used many times, although I've only been asked for the actual letter once by US officials.

I always travel with a letter from DH if he is not accompanying us. I also give one to my Mom if she takes one of the kids across the line. One thing I also do is photo copy in colour my passport and drivers licence and or my DH's. The border agents my Mom dealt with said it was very helpful.

On a side note....I have ONLY ever been asked for the letter coming home by a Canadian border agent!!!
