border ? bringing our niece

Hi! Does anyone have any experience with bringing extended family members that are kids over the border? We are bringing our niece with us on our trip (my sister can't come) and we will have a letter of permission (not sure of the content yet), her birth certificate and health card. Do you think we'll have a problem? Thanks!

I have brought my DD's best friend 2x. We had a notorized letter from her parents and the usual I.D. and we never even asked to show anything both times crossing the border.

We just returned from florida on August 6th. We took our nephew with us. No problems crossing the border. We also had his health card, parents work health coverage card, his birth certificate and a letter from his parents.
In the letter he had my sister state that both her and her ex knew he was coming with us and where we were staying and the legth of the stay. We also had them put in the letter in case anything was to happen to him during our trip that we had their permission to have any medical preceedures done. They both signed in, whoever it was not notarized.

We did the same thing with our 14 yr old nephew/cousin

He had his passport, too

We flew, and he had to go through USC&I alone, though(the AC Agent separated us at the line)....which we thought was a little odd...the agent read his parents letter, and asked for us to be identified... We happily complied, and off we all went.

My sisters and I have all taken each others kids over the border (driving) with no problems whatsoever. I thought it was funny that they wanted my DL and Birth Cert both even though the last names are different so they don't really "match each other", but didn't even question why we had one kid with a totally different last name than the rest of us

We too had a letter given us permission to act on her behalf for all medical and legal matters, and it was not notorized, but did have both day/night contact numbers for both DSis and DBIL.

Make sure that you get a note that is signed from the parents. I had to go to a seminar in the states for skipping, so we had 5 in our car for the overnight trip. 3 kids in the back and myself (passanger female 33) and driver who was 25 also a female. Anyways...at the boarder they gave us one hell of a hard time getting across INTO the states. The kids were all from separate families too so it made it harder. To avoid any problems make sure you have that signed note.

The biggest kick was they asked us if we had any wepons...so one of the kids that was about 12 said "we have these skipping ropes and they are wepons against the other team" God...I wanted to melt and tell that child to shut it. The boarder guard was in no mood for jokes. It's funny now when we look at the situation, but at the time it was a no laughing matter with them.

I definately will agree with the other posters regarding the signed letter from the parents. When I was 12, I was stopped at customs and interrogated for an hour on whether or not my father had permission to take me into the US (my parents are divorced). We didn't know about the signed letter and therefore it was quite a scary experience for myself.
