We are a family that visits Disney as often as possible. Sometimes it's lavish sometimes it's budget but we never seem to notice the difference.
This one was budget.
I am Lisa like so many of you Disney obsessed. I have been more than 30 times I have lost count. I have been on just about every kind of trip there is. I have been solo, with a baby, with an annoying MIL, on a honeymoon, trip where everyone got sick, one with a friend. We have stayed on site, off site for us Disney is a constant changing experience.
Traveling with me on this trip is my daughter Gracie, this is her 19th trip. She wants to be a CM when she grows up. I tell her that is fine. As soon as she graduates from MIT she can do what she wants
We are snarky, we are fun, we are drinkers. That might be part of why we are fun
Here we are at the AKL on our last family trip in 2009
The third member of our group is my DBF Jay. This is his second trip to Disney despite living in Florida twice and California for a number of years. When we met he made fun of me and my Disney obsession. He is more of a Vegas kind of guy.....not any more!
This is Jay after riding RRC for the first time.
I knew that I was leaving on June 10th. We were not sure if Jay was going to be able to join us until about 10 days before. My plans changed form an off site to the Pop Century. Restaurant plans changed several times. I started booking things 5 days before we left
I know, I know!
Here is the thing about us. We are fortunate enough to go often so we don't usually have anything we must do except have a great time. So if we can't get a certain restaurant (Cali Grill) it is not a big deal.
The first day Friday morning found me taking my daughter to her last day of school. I had to tell her about half a dozen times that YES did DID have to go. I had a lot to do and I figured she would be happier watching movies at school.
My schedule then had me working out at the Y.
That didn't happen.
What I did do was watch an episode of Real Housewives. It's a guilty obsession.
Jay walked in a 9:30
I didn't expect him until around 11:00. I still had to go to the grocery store, they had been out of the bread we like for sandwiches the day before. Then I needed to make sandwiches, pack the cool and then pack the car. I wanted to be on the road by 11:00.
I went to the grocery store, got what I needed. Stopped by Grace's school on the way home and picked her up. She was thrilled to leave early.
Got home and made sandwiches. Everyone likes something different so they were made to order and I wrote on the ziplock who's sandwich it was so make it easier.
We packed the cooler, the car. I had a lot of stuff I was worried it would not all fit. Gracie did need a little room in the backseat and my car is small to begin with. I had stacked everything we were taking next to the door and Jay packed it all. After the car was completely packed Gracie walkes up to the car with her bag....I almost forgot all her clothes
She also had a lot of stuff for the backseat, we had to have some serious compromise on how much she could bring.
She wedged herself in the backseat and miraculously found places to stash all her stuff.
We were on the road by 11:30.
Once we were out of the driveway Gracie got to look in her Disney Backpack. The backpack is a big part of the trip for her. It started when she was 3. I had found a toddler sized backpack and filled it each day with little dollar store type toys to keep her busy in restaurants and for waiting in line. It worked like a charm on that trip. I never again left the house without a backpack for her. That kept her happy through her childhood. Each time we would take a trip I would get her a new backpack and fill it with things to keep her busy, it was always new crayons, coloring book, stickers. I would include a ziplock of treats and candy. That kept me sane when flights were delayed, it ket her happy on the long rides when we drove.
Over the years it has evolved. I stopped buying a new backpack a few years ago. We found a really nice Princess backpack on wheels at TDS and it's the one we use now. This time especially I found it a little harder to pack. She has really grown out of all the Princess stuff you can find at Michaels or the Dollar Store. i filled it with magazines (American Girl and Highlights) puzzle books, some AG craft books Mad Libs and a blank notebook. We had been in Washington over Spring Break and she kept a journal of that trip. She planned to do one for tis trip too and I thought it would be awesome to add in her comments to this trip report.
The past thing I added was cool candy. I tried to find some candy that she never gets. She doesn't eat a lot of it. I went to the Party Store for that. They seems to have a good selection.
The backpack had been packed for a few days and was prominently displayed in the living room to tease her. She does not get to look inside it until we are officially on the way.
Here is Gracie in 2009 with THE BACKPACK
About 20 minutes into the drive my GPS went senile. Lost satellites. lost everything. Great.
Florida is not hard to find. Once you get to 95 it's a straight boring shot. Follow the signs to South of The Border and just keep going. Problem was we were spending the weekend at my Sisters house in Florida before going to Disney and I didn't even know her address by heart. It was stored in the GPS. I sent a text to my Mom to get her address and I figured when we got to Florida we would use the cell phones for directions.
The drive was tedious why does it seems to take so long to get to Disney? I drove like I was in an Indy race, Jay drove like an old man.
We took turns driving while the other played on the ipad. Gracie had her electronics and backpack. She kept herself busy. I didn't hear "are we there yet once" she knows better I would have stuck her in the trunk. We only had to stop for gas once. My car is not fancy but it's a hybrid and it gets downright sexy at the gas pump.
Somewhere in SC I saw it......here is where you imagine clouds clearing on a stormy day or angels appearing in heaven.
A sign for Starbucks!
We tend to challenge each other to see how few times we have to stop. Each stop is an admission of weakness! However on the entire trip thus far which at that pint was around 6 hours we had not stopped for a bathroom break. SO I throw it out there...Gracie do you need to stop? If she does it's on me and I don't take the hit for stopping. She did.
Of course when we pulled into the Starbucks everyone knew what I was doing. I took the teasing. Funny that everyone else wanted one too. Gracie got a double espresso. Gotta love a long car ride with a 10 year old hopped u on caffeine.
Of course not. Her Dad works for Starbucks so she ordered some frozen concoction like one of those coffee pros that want a drink with 15 different parts in it. Jay and I just drink black Iced Coffee. mmmmmmmm Starbucks has the best iced coffee.
While I was waiting in line the girl ahead of me was traveling with an elderly woman was struggling to pay. She had a handful of money and kept pulling out more and more. She handed the cashier and said "oops not one of the hundreds" and took it back and flashed a huge roll of hundred dollar bills. She found a small bill and paid. I though it was really dangerous for her to do that. We could have been dangerous people
When I told Jay about it he said "we should have rolled her and then we could eat at V&As
....see, snarky!
The rest of the drive was uneventful at some point the GPS woke up and guided us to my sister Dawn's house. We got there at 10:30 thanks to my driving like a bat outta you know where. We stayed up until 1am talking.
I was going to need the sleep, tomorrow there was blood!
