I agree with just about everything said so far. There are far worse things than booing. Here are a few things that a person could do that are far worse than saying "boooo":
-swearing
-flipping the bird or some other demeaning hand signal
-mooning
-throwing objects
(I have witnessed all of these acts at every kind of sporting event, no matter what level.)
I am a NASCAR fan, and yet, I will never go to a Nextel Cup race. I'll still go to the Grand National Series races and the Truck Series races, but not the Nextel Cup races. Why? Because I'm afraid if Jeff Gordon (the most hated driver in motor-sports) wins, people will start throwing cans, bottles, and blunt objects at him. I don't want to have to rush out and avoid getting my eye taken out by a glass bottle or an aluminum can. That has happened on many occasions where fans don't just booo, they say far worse things and throw potentially hurtful objects onto the field or, in this case, the track. That is when it gets way out of hand.
One time, I went to a Grand National Series race at the Kentucky Speedway with a few relatives. The pre-race ceremonies started and they introduced Kevin Harvick to be the grand marshal for the event. This drunk guy (I didn't know if he was drunk for sure, but you could almost tell he was) started flipping him the bird, yelling a whole bunch of 4-letter words, and, yes, he mooned him in front of the 70,000 plus fans. He was immediately escorted out of there, but it is kinda sad when people resort to doing that crap. A simple "booo" shouldn't make you feel uncomfortable or gross you out. If it does, there's something wrong with you.
Also, you can't ban "booing" because you cannot enforce it. If the entire home crowd boos the other team, what do you do? Arrest them? Throw them all out? If they tried, it would most likely start a riot.
It just goes to show you that there are somethings in this world you should just leave well enough alone.
