to the Dis I shall go!

My friend has asked for book recommendations, I gave her a few but told her I would ask my DIS buddies -(as they are quite knowledgeable) for more.

The young man who moved in with their family is 22. He has led a disrupted life in foster care/adopted into a large family as a late teen. He went thru the gamut of imaginable rough times. He has turned his life around, is a great young man is looking for gentle guidance. Last week, when the cable tv was not available in his room, she put a book on his bedside table. It was
"Tuesdays with Morrie". By the end of the week the young man had finished the book and asked my friend is she had anymore books about life lessons.

So that is the quest.... to find books that deal with life lessons. Ones that are not overtly "Christian" oriented... she doesn't want to Bible thump him.. but Christian themes would be ok.

So Dis'ers can you please give suggestions of Books with Life Lessons?
(Chicken Soup books.. got em) Thank you so very much.. it is most appreciated!

How about something educational from Dave Ramsey?

I also think Marley & Me is a good read for any age.

Thank you.

Diser's always know what is best!

These are great suggestions. Ya know, when she asked me my mind just went blank, I knew I could come here and you guys would get my mind moving again.:hug:

If you can get your hands on a copy, how about "I'm Proud of You: My Friendship with Fred Rogers" by Tim Madigan:

Of course he may be too young to even know who Mr. Rogers is, which would probably make the book less inspiring.

Letters to a Young Poet: Ranier Maria Rilke

The Way of the Peaceful Warrior: Dan Millman

Siddhartha: Herman Hesse

I can't remember the name of it right now, but what about the one from the professor who recently died. It might have been My Last Lecture or something similar. I still haven't read it because I get so sad with things like that, but I know my dad liked it.

The Invisible Wall(makes you think what the heck have I been complaining about?) And yet ends with you feeling positive.

It's been compared to Angela's Ashes- but honestly I read that and wanted to drown myself it was so depressing. The Invisible Wall is not that!

Not preachy in any way.

My teen and DH are really into historical Fiction so sorry I don't have so many inspirational ones. But if you want good reads I have plenty of those.

There is no better book on life lessons than this one, in my opinion.

I think this will fit the bill PERFECTLY.

I love this book. It will change your life.

Several by Og Mandino, including The Greatest Salesman In The World, Mission: Success! and The Choice.

Hi!

My husband has read both of Tony Dungee's(he used to be a NFL coach) books and has really felt that they have helped him. The books discussed life lessons and how to handle them and touches on topics that most men go through whether it be dating, love, relationships and sex.

My husband has now passed them on as gifts to some men in our families and to some of his soldiers that need a touch of "help"

Dune by Frank Herbert

The Philosophy in this book are perfect for someone who needs some direction.

Fire in the Belly: On Being a Man by Sam Keen

All of you are most awesome.

I will be sending all of your recommendations to my friend. Thank you for the time and consideration you put into your ideas.

It means alot to me. :dance3:

Another suggestion....

A Child CAlled It...they are a series of books (A man Named Dave is another of them)

About a boy who was severely abused by his mother and how he overcomes it and sees the bright side of life!

A Child Called It...they are a series of books (A man Named Dave is another of them)

About a boy who was severely abused by his mother and how he overcomes it and sees the bright side of life!

I was about to suggest that book. :thumbsup2

Wayne Dyer has a new book out called, Excuses Begone. His companion PBS series is showing now during PBS pledge drives. I think it is one of his best and most practical to date.

Also, The Richest Man in Babylon.

Napoleon Hill's book: Think and Grow Rich.

Louise Hay: You Can Heal Your Life. about her own journey of using the power of the mind and affirmations to heal herself from cancer. The now has built and owns THE largest self help publishing company in the world. She is, almost single-handedly responsible for turning around the attitude, when AIDS was first discovered, that men automatically died of AIDS, to shifting to still living a full life with AIDS.

Any of the books by Anthony Robbins. They are life changing. His biggest lesson is: "The past does not equal the future." Another is: "In a moment of decision, your destiny is shaped." And: "Change happens in an instant. Since I work on staff at his live events, I can get your friend a staff discount to any of Tony's events around the country. Just PM me. (This is NOT a referral. It is a coupon.)

The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield. A book of 10 Insights written in a mystery novel form.

The book & DVD, The Secret, is a huge phenomenon right now, for changing the way people think.
