I need some suggestions for books for my (soon to be) 7 year old who is an extremely advanced reader. Loves to read and it really good at sounding words out or figuring out the word based on context. Loves Star Wars, anything related to space/sci fi.

Series:
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Marvin Redpost
Hank Zipster
Magic Treehouse
Cam Jansen
A to Z Mysteries

A little older reading level series:
Percy Jackson
Warriors
Seekers
Haddix (Among...) series
Harry Potter

Magic Treehouse is probably the best fit for his interest and level.
The higher level books should peek his interest, but may be too difficult.

The Phantom Tollbooth- great classic book for kids.

Here is a link to Rick Riordan's list of books for kids. He is the author of the Percy Jackson series (The Lightening Thief is the first book, and soon to be a movie). He is both a father to boys and a grade school teacher (in addition to being an author). Most of the list is for older kids but a few are in the right age range.

My DS7 has never given Magic Treehouse the time of day, even though every other kid I know seems to like them. He even inherited almost the entire set from his cousin and won't touch them. :confused3

He loves Diary of a Wimpy Kid, anything Pokemon (and they do have novels and junior novels) and Stink (Judy Moody's little brother's series).

I found this website called Books By You dot com... they have various novels that you can personalize by giving the main character and supporting characters the name and description of your choice.

My DD13 who is very interested in the Twilight Saga will be getting the teen version of a vampire love story with her as the main character...

They are priced at about $25 and hopefully worth the money... I think that she'll be very happy to read a story that she is starring in!

I'm considering doing the same for my DD9...they have several titles to choose from with descriptions of all books...

Good luck!

Also, my son LOVES the Jr. James Bond series. They are called Young Bond series.

My 7 year old son loves Diary of a Wimpy Kid. We have to read it together, though, as it's, I think, 4th or 5th grade level and he's only reading level 2.5.

Magic Treehouse would be good!

Thank you for all the suggestions!! I was also a really big reader when little, but the books I enjoyed were much more female-oriented and I am having a tough time figuring out the boy side.

Geronimo Stilton
good mix of illustrations and creative fonts too help transition to chapter books

Flat Stanley
Capt. Underpants
are some that they like too but I didn't like CU & the way they portrayed the school principal.

Wimpy Kid is for a little older like 9 - it's about a 6th grader.

Geronimo for sure! I got them from the library and my son loves them.

It's tough when you have an advanced reader--they are ready to read at a higher level, but the content of some of the higher level books may not be appropriate. My 8 year-old is reading at a 9th grade level and sometimes that can be a nightmare, lol. He isn't interested in any of the Magic Treehouse, Cam Jansen, Geronimo Stilton stuff. He's way past Captain Underpants, although he does (like all kids) love the Wimpy Kids books.

My son has read at least 60 of the Goosebumps books and loved them. He also likes a lot of non-fiction stuff, like books on sports, weather, natural disasters, etc. Like someone else said, my son loved the Stink books. He also liked the Roscoe Riley books. Oh, and don't forget to try Fudge/Superfudge by Judy Blume!

My boys are almost 10 and they have 2 different Star Wars series written for young readers that they like. One has the "Last of the Jedi" series which is based on Obi-Wan and some previously unknown Jedi during the post EP III-pre EP IV era. The other is "Rebel Force" which is the OT characters, Luke, Han and Leia and adventures they have between EP IV and V. If your 7 year old is an advanced reader, they'd probably be a good fit for him. Mine read at average levels for their ages and they started reading them last year (3rd grade).

Diary of a Wimpy kid is also a big favorite. They were assigned that book for summer reading pre 4th grade and loved it so much I had to go out and get the rest of the series. I think my one son knows all the words to all the books already.

regards

I agree Wimpy Kids and Magic Tree House Books. My boys love these!!!

Jr. James Bond Series. That sounds interesting. My boys would love those.

Also, my son LOVES the Jr. James Bond series. They are called Young Bond series.

My DD doesn't like the regular Magic Treehouse books, but she's really enjoying the Research Guide to Space. If you're looking for readable nonfiction, I'd recommend them. (The back of Space says RL2.9, but it's really an AR 5.1 - most of the other guides are in the AR 4.5-5.0 range.)

Nonfiction is a good way to get a higher reading level without inappropriate content.

Grrr - just lost my post. Since you said space/sci fi, I assume you *really* meant space adventure sci-fi and not fantasy sci-fi. (It's a point of contention at my house...)

On the more fantasy side of sci fi is Droon, by Tony Abbott. DD7, also an advanced reader, loves these and the library couldn't keep them on the shelves last summer. The Golden Compass series also falls more to the fantasy side but the content may be too mature in places.

Jules Verne? Classic SciFi - maybe an abridged version?

Bunches of choose-your-own-adventure books. Ours is by Montgomery. Good for a few reads until the 'preferred' path is found.

I just found that Steven Hawkings and his daughter have co-authored two books - George's Cosmic Treasure Hunt and George's Secret Key to the Universe. They're on my wish list!

I've got Dr. Doolittle queued up for DD soon - I read it in 2nd grade. Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is sitting there, too.

For the record, Amazon considers Mary Poppins to be children's sci-fi. Um, NO!

Hope it helps!

Deb

All of my children have participated in the Battle of the Books through their schools. I find that they are great books for all age groups, so when looking for some reading I often refer to this website. I hope it helps.....

A very good selection of books...but the average publication date is YEARS ago! NOT that it is bad--but it is a bit sad that with all the wonderful books written since them that they don't add some newer titles to the list.
( I notice it says the list will NOT change unless a book goes out of print, which would suggest that it has been an issue...)

Some great other suggestions that I second:
Geronimo Stilton
Stink

More suggestions:
Sammy Keyes series
29 Clues

Some fav authors:
Gordon Korman
Cornelia Funke
Anthony Horowitz
Bruce Coville

I am sitting in my media now...continuing to be inspired:)

What has he read and enjoyed? There is a lot of room in a seven year old "very advanced" reader - one of my girlfriend's kids read all seven Harry Potter books by that age. My kids, who are good readers, didn't have the patience to read much more than the Magic Treehouse type stuff. (My daughter drove me crazy for three years, testing beyond her grade level for reading ability and comprehension, and refusing to read books that didn't have pictures. Graphic novels were the saving grace for three years).

Heinlein wrote a lot of classic SF for kids, but I'd think he'd still be a few years from it, even as an advanced reader (but then again, my girlfriend's son was reading it at that age - so it isn't out of the question).
