Books for 10 year olds

Hi All

I usually buy my nieces and nephews storybooks to go along with their Christmas presents, but this year I am in a quandry over good books for ten year old girls. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My DD is eleven... and she has been into a few series.

Dolphin Diaries
Babysitters Club
Harry Potter (of course)
Amazing days of Abby Hayes
Molly Moon

How about Beverly Cleary books. The Ramona books were always a favorite of my daughters.

Judy Blume also writes great books for that age group.

Another favorite author is Meg Cabot books. They love the Princess Diary series. Although my daughters were a little older when they began to read Meg Cabot, I think around 12 years old.

My first thought was Judy Blume...then I got to Ramona...and what about Booky (or is that, Beverly Cleary?)...apparently we think alike minniemomof3.

With Judy Blume you do need to pay attention to which book you get since they can be for just about all ages 6-18--but it's easy to tell by the book description. The Superfudge series is a good place to start if she hasn't read it yet.

Other Favourites of mine from around that age:
Anne of Green Gables (start with the first book, but if she likes it there's a whole series to continue one book per gift time)

The Dark is Rising series (these are all for younger readers, so you could give the whole set at once)

Can you describe her reading level? Do you know which books she has read recently? (I ask, because I've found that 10 year olds can have quite varied levels.)

my DD9 is a "girly girl" , but she really enjoys the Adventures of Mary KAte and Ashley. the stories are based on this age frame. They also have older series for the older age group. she has read the Judy Blume Superfudge series, and Sheila the Great. She is also getting some of the new High School Musical book series from "Santa"

My daughter loved the Disney Girls series at age 9/10. They are really nice books. She was never into babysitters club at all.

My DD, who is now 12, started enjoying the Dear Canada series of books when she was 9. The Dear Canada series is a journal type of book, written by fictional girls of 9-12 years old, who live through historic events in Canadian history.

In the U.S., we found the American version of such books in the Dear America series.

If she likes fantasy she might like the Books by Cornelia Funke. Especially the Dragon Rider. Or a series by Kathryn Lasky called the Guardians of Ga'Hoole about a land of Owls.

Thanks for all your suggestions. They have some Judy Blume books, but I don't know which ones. One of my nieces is an avid reader, the other a casual reader. I had seen the Dear Canada books, maybe those are a neat idea. The Disney girl books sound interesting too.

I loved the L.M. Montgomery books and the Booky series when I was a kid. Off to Chapters I go this afternoon.

My daughter loves Inkheart. It is a young adult-child fantasy novel by Cornelia Funke, and the first book of the Inkworld trilogy.

My daughter loved the Disney Girls series at age 9/10. They are really nice books.

i have never heard of these, but i am sure they would appeal to my DD. What are some titles? IS the series called, disney Girls?

I would recommend the Peter Series of books by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. They are a prequel to Peter Pan. The books are Peter and the Star Catchers, Peter and the Shadow Thieves, and Peter and the Secret of Rundoon. Ridley Pearson also wrote a book called Kingdom Keepers which is quite good as well!

My DD11 is a voracious reader with eclectic tastes. She enjoys the Disney Fairies books, Goblin Quest and Goblin Hero by Jim C Hines (I read these books too, very funny), Golden Compass and Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman and Eragon and Eldest by Christoph Paolini. Presently she is reading Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul.

How about the Spiderwick Chronicles...there are 5 in the first series and they have just released book 1 from the new series. My daughter just loves them!
