Hi there. If this question has been asked and answered could someone point me to the correct thread....

Do DVC members receive preferance over non-DVC members paying cash?

In other words, if we change our reservation at the 7 month window, to say the BCV, but the accomodations we request aren't available because a non-DVC member has booked the room.....are there any controlls in place for situations like this?

Thanks!!!

They are two totally seperate bookings controled by two groups.

Cash CRO or cental booking

Points MS or DVC the rooms sometimes get passed back and forth but for the most part are either one or the other.

So to answer NO your points have no effect on cash ressies

As noted, availability of reservations at DVC resorts comes from two sources.

The first is member points. Member's own 96-98% of each DVC resort and MS first priority is to reserve that percentage of the room inventory using DVC points.

DVD, the developer, has maintained ownership of 2-4% at each DVC resort. They hold these rooms to maintain member inventory when rooms are out-of-service for renovation or other unavoidable maintenance issues. (--like when BWV took a number of rooms out-of-service when the siding and plumbing was repaired/replaced over the past couple of years). Any rooms not needed for such maintenance are available for cash reservations to the general public thru CRO. In addition, whenever a member uses DVC points for one of the non-DVC options (Disney Collection, Disney Cruise Line, Concierge Collection or Adventure Collection) those points are also used for cash reservations thru CRO. Cash gained from these reservations is used to "pay" for the non-DVC topins. At 60 days prior, any rooms unreserved from the member's inventory are also released to CRO for cash reservations. Cash gained from this "breakage" inventory is used to offset member dues and does appear in our annual budget as an income line entry.

The member inventory will not normally be higher than the 96-98% and is usually lower due to member's using points for the other options. It's very common to find cash availability at times when there is nothing available using points.

CRO doesn't usually have any DVC units at the 7 month mark, unless someone has booked outside of DVC by using their points. DVC rooms are points or cash, and are available to members first, so DVC members can book DVC resorts on cash within their 11/7 month window thru MS. Rooms are usually released to CRO around 3 months before check-in. If CRO has rooms available at a DVC resort, those are usually the 5% of the rooms that belong to Disney.

I've seen times when MS didn't have any rooms at a given resort for members, but CRO did for cash reservations. To be honest, though, I think that this was when BCV wasn' totally "sold out" and so those points that hadn't been sold weren't turned over to MS for reservations with points yet. I remember that when we first bought our BCV points we couldn't get a reservation there for a trip we wanted, but there were rooms there available for cash. It was sort of frustrating at the time because we had just bought those points.
