Booking Questions from a newbie

Ok, ill try and word this as simple as i can. I hope it comes out correctly.

we just bought into dvc sunday. 160 points.

We get our points every august 1 i was told.

if we theoretically used up all our points and dont get any until aug again-any year-what happens if today, i wanted to book a room for sept, but i have already used up my allotment?

When i call MS to book a room for sept, do they see that i will have the points on aug 1 so booking for sept is fine, or do they see that i have zero points, and i can still book, but now i have to borrow from the points i get in aug since i dont technically have them yet.


then my other question is, what if i cancel that reservation?? If they are now considered borrowed, how does that work, or since i didnt use any since i didnt have any and was getting them in my account a month before we were supposed to go, did i lose nothing?


I hope i worded this all correct, because i think i am confued

Congratulations!
First, be clear on whether Aug06 points are available to you or not.
Then, you can book a reservation for next september. MS will know the points will be taken from your Aug07 Use Year. The points won't actually be taken out until your trip. If you cancel your trip (within the necessary time frame), the points will be available for another trip. They will not be "borrowed' into your Aug06 Use Year.

Your pts. are available 11/7 months. previous to your "check out" date of your upcoming vacation. So...you have the points now, say to go Sept 1st, to book your "home" resort for the 11th month and need to wait till the 7th month to book anywhere else.

Think of it this way... even though the calendar says 2007, you are still only in the first half of 2006 from a DVC standpoint (with an August use-year).

If I have 0 points now, but have 100 coming in August, can I book now for August?

You can book now for a stay ending before December 30, 2007 at your home resort; or book at any DVC resort for a stay between now and August 30, 2007. If your stay includes time before August 1, Member Services will borrow points from your 2007 use year for those days.

With an August Use Year:

Your 2006 points are valid for stays from 8/1/06 to 7/31/07
Your 2007 points are valid for stays from 8/1/07 to 7/31/08
Your 2008 points are valid for stays from 8/1/08 to 7/31/09
etc.

If you want to book a stay for Sep 2007, you would use '07 Use Year points for that stay. If you still had some '06 UY points left, you could bank those into your '07 Use Year (subject to banking deadlines) and use those for a Sep '07 stay. You could also borrow points from your '08 UY for a stay in Sep '07.

You can book a stay 11 months prior to your check-out date at your home resort and 7 months prior to check-out at non-home resorts, regardless of your Use Year. You must have enough points available in the same Use Year as your dates of stay to pay for that reservation, which can include banked and borrowed points.

If you have to cancel a reservation and you cancel at least 31 days prior to check-in, the points go back into your account. If any of those points are banked or borrowed points, they cannot be put back into the UY they came from -- they stay in the UY into which they were banked/borrowed and will need to be used for another stay prior to the end of that UY or they will expire. Any "regular" points (neither banked nor borrowed) can be banked into the next UY, subject to your banking deadlines. If you cancel a reservation 30 days or less prior to check in, the points go into "holding" and cannot be banked. They can only be used to make a reservation 60 days or less in advance of check in, and if not used they will expire at the end of that UY.

Yes because with an Aug UY, that August stay falls within your 2007 Use Year, so you would pay for it with '07 UY points (and/or banked '06 points and/or borrowed '08 points). As Disney Doc points out, you are currently within the 7-month window for an August stay (up to a check out date of Aug 30th) so you could book that August vacation at any resort.
