We are new to DVC and our looking forward to booking our first trip as DVC members. Our home resort is GF but would like to try other resorts first. We will be going May 14 - 21, 2015. I'm being told I can't book until February. How limited will my options be? We would like to book a one bedroom.

For non-home resort reservations, you can book those (subject to availability) beginning at 7 months from your check-in date.

Mamagass, whoever told you that was wrong, unless you mean you can't book until February for reasons outside of DVC.

Home resort at eleven months. All others at seven months from arrival day.

If you can't book until three months out for personal reasons, you might or might not get anything at all. Decent chance in May unless you're talking Memorial Day. For that weekend, it will likely be sold out at three months everywhere. For your specific dates mentioned here, there is a chance.

If you want to use your VGF points to book a different resort, you can do so 7 months prior to your check-in date. In your case, that would be Oct 14, 2014 for a stay with a check-in date of May 14, 2015.

The first part of May is usually not a busy time for DVC resorts so you should have some good options if you book when your 7-month window opens in October.

For a trip beginning May 14, 2015, you'll be able to book other DVC resorts beginning October 14, 2014.

Availability is dependent on several variables, but mid-May usually has good availability at the 7-month window. The key to finding availability is to remain flexible. If your first choice in resorts isn't available, then be prepared with a second or possibly a third choice. Sometimes, we'll tweak our dates if our first choice is already booked.

Now that you are a DVC member, you can sign on to the Member website and use the new Resort Availability Tool to see what is still available as you get closer to your 7-month window. The Tool is under the "Vacation Planning" tab. You enter your dates and the resorts you want to check. The Resort Availability Tool will show you, by Accommodation Type, what can still be booked.

Good luck!

What was the reason for being told that you have to wait until February? Did you buy from Disney?

We did buy from Disney. I was surprised by the response as well because I thought we could book 7 months out as well.

I wonder if the occupancy date of the unit your points belong to is Feb 2015.

You might want to call your guide to get clarification of why you were told you can't book until Feb.

Could be a misunderstanding of Use Year, if you bought a February use year.

I'm pretty sure supersnoop is dead on. Mixing up UY and booking window is the only thing that makes sense here.

Disney can't sell points for room units that haven't been declared into active DVC inventory, so this has to be a simple misunderstanding by the OP. Glad they asked here, rather than getting shafted on making their first reservation.
