I will be short points for my vacation next year. I am curious if I do a cash reservation for the extra days 1) am i able to book at the same time I will book using my points and 2) do i pay for the cash portion upfront or is it paid 30 days out?

1) yes. you would need to book the cash night(s) with MS to link the reservation to your stay on points.

2) ...i'm stumped, sorry.

There are 2 ways you can book cash rooms, one is through standard WDW CRO, and the second is through DVC.

Cash DVC rooms are on an as available basis and discounted rooms are on the same basis. If part of your vacation is on a weekend (and not during the few busiest weeks of the year) there is usually availability at the 25% discounted rate. This also saves you the most points since weekend points are higher. These reservations can be linked. You pay for the DVC cash reservation at check in and can cancel up to 5 days before travel. If you are a “no show” your DVC account will be charges for the cash reservation.
