I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'm not finding it with the search function.

Let's say I become an owner in July with AKV as my home resort. I would look at using those point for a stay somewhere in January and VB in March(both 2008). Now, here is where I get confused. I have used 2007 pts for both of those stays, but I want to book for AKV for Oct. 08. I can book for the 10/08 stay in Nov. of 07. When I book that 10/08 stay am I booking with the 2008 pts. that I will be receiving in July? Is this a situation where I would technically have to borrow from 2008 even though the time I want to use the points is 2008? Does MS automatically use the 2008 pts. for that reservation if they can see I haven't borrowed them already? Does any of this make sense? I want to be able to utilize the 11 month window, but I'm trying to figure out how to manage points so that I have enough to book.

If this question has induced a headache, I'm sorry!

It depends on what Use Year month you get. That depends on what Use Year months are available at the time you purchase.

There is no July UY, so let's just say for example you get a June Use Year month.

You then make a chart like this:
Use Year.....Vacation Dates
2007....Jun 1, 2007 thru May 30, 2008
2008....Jun 1, 2008 thru May 30, 2009
2009....Jun 1, 2008 thru May 30, 2010
etc.

Both your Jan 2008 and your March 2008 stays would be within a June 2007 use year.
The November stay would require 2008 Use Year points.

You make a reservation at the 11/7 month window, regardless of what use year month you own.

Points are used for reservations from the Use Year that covers the vacation dates. So a reservation in November would come from your 2008 allotment. You are not borrowing them. You are booking from your upcoming allotment, basically pre-assigning those points to your November vaction.

Note it all depends on use year purchased. You do have some control over this, based on what use year months DVC has available. Once a specific use year month is sold out, it is no longer available.

All the above can change. For example, suppose you purchase a December Use Year month. In that case your chart would look like this:

Use Year...Vacation Dates
2006.....Dec 1, 2006 thru Nov 30, 2007
2007.....Dec 1, 2007 thru Nov 30, 2008
2008.....Dec 1, 2008 thru Nov 30, 2009

If you had a December Use Year, then all three of your vacation dates would take points from your 2007 Use Year.

Finally, if you bank points from one year to another, they simply move on the chart to the use year next in line. So if you banked 2006 UY points they would go into UY 2007. Those same points cannot be banked again, I.E. they cannot be banked into UY 2008. You could bank your regular 2007 allocation points into 2008.

Borrowing is similar. Points borrowed move from their allocated use year to the previous use year.

Again, remember, it all depends on what use year month you own. You can make a similar chart for any of the 8 use year months that DVC uses. (These are February, March, April, June, August, September, October, December.)

Hope this helps.

That helps a ton!! I was basically trying to figure out if MS would automatically use the points that the vacation would fall within. I'm glad to see they do and I don't have to borrow for the scenario I proposed. I just couldn't find a simple way to ask the question.

Thanks!:goodvibes
