Booking Hotel to Get FPP?

I am currently 31 days away from my trip (staying off-site), and planning on staying up until midnight to book my FPP's! As I have been planning, I started to wonder if anyone has ever booked a hotel to get their FP's at 60 days, then canceled the hotel. I am a total rule follower, so it's not something I would do, but I was just curious if Disney would cancel everything if the hotel was canceled. (Can you even cancel a resort reservation once its made?) Anyone have any knowledge of this?

Actually, a relatively common practice.

(I've not done so, myself, as we always stay on-property, anyway.)

Yes this is very common with room only reservations. I imagine in the new year we will either see you loose all your FPs if you cancel a room only reservation or you won't be able to cancel them with out penalty anymore up until 5 days prior and that they will switch it to 30 days.
