Booking for a friend questions

I’ll try to keep this brief. I have a friend that’s looking to do a 2 night trip to WDW. It’ll be the first trip for their young children, and the plan is to primarily stick to MK.

I’m considering booking a studio at one of the MK area resorts for them. I know there are risks to doing it. They didn’t ask; I’m planning to offer it as an option once they’ve committed to going. They could give me whatever the price for the value resort they’re considering is, or less (I know they won’t take the room for nothing). Here are my questions:

1. I have a September UY, and the trip would be in February. Am I correct in thinking I could book the room and if the trip was cancelled prior to 30 days before I wouldn’t have the points go into holding, and I could still bank them if I wanted to in April?

2. If the above is correct, I could do a waitlist for a room today without risk, correct? Rooms are limited (there are some higher point rooms available today) but I think there’s a possibility of a waitlist coming through for a couple nights by then.

3. If I make the booking prior to their decision, can I put it in my name and then switch the reservation to their name once they’ve committed? Can I add additional people to the reservation after the fact (as long as it doesn’t exceed the number of people the room fits)?

4. I likely wouldn’t be there when they’re there, but if the reservation is in their name they wouldn’t have any issues driving in to the gate to check in, right? They should receive free parking at the resort because they’re staying in a DVC room, and access to the laundry room if desired, correct?

I know I’d have to explain that they wouldn’t receive daily housekeeping, but with such a short stay I can’t see that being an issue. Is there anything else I didn’t think of that I or they need to know? Any reason (other than points going into holding if cancelled last minute) for why I shouldn’t do this?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Yes, you can do that but I would not borrow points to make it happen because you would not be able to bank them if things fall through.
  2. Wait lists are fine. You could even do it with your friend's name as the lead name when you set it up.
  3. Switching lead names is fine but can take time, depending on how close you are to arrival date. It's better to put your friend on as the lead name from the get go.
  4. Your friend should have no trouble checking in as long as the reservation is linked in MDE. They will get free resort parking and their MB or key cards will open the laundry room door. Detergent and fabric softener will not be provided unless they are in a 1BR or larger.
