Booking DVC

We're new DVC members and have just booked a week at our home resort VGF. We want to add another week at a different resort. I know that we can contact DVC to add nights to our home reservation but are concerned that we won't get the resort we want at the 7 month deadline. Any advice gratefully received. If we add to the VGF now (we are travelling next September), can we then change the booking at 7 months? If we can, will we lose points? Or should we just cross our fingers and hope?

Here are some things to think about.

You can't modify a reservation online.

You can have MS modify your reservation but they can't hold inventory as they make the switch.

If you don't use all of the freed up points, think about what happens to them based on the point rules.

Owning at your favorite home resorts is the only way to guarantee that you get what you want 99% of the time.

I'd make a separate reservation in a separate name for the second reservation at your home resort then try for what you'd prefer at 7 months out and wait list if needed.

We do this every year. I first book all our preferred dates at our home resort at 11 months out to be sure we have a reservation somewhere. Then at seven months, I make any resort changes. You can keep your first seven nights at your home resort and change the remaining nights to any other available resort, or wait list up to two others that might be unavailable. If your modified res uses less points than your original booking, those points will be returned to your account.
