If I book a room with current use year points and then have to cancel, can those points be banked?

As long as you haven't passed your banking deadline.

Is this correct always? I thought that if you cancel with 30 days or less, the points cannot be banked. Can someone confirm/clarify for myself and the original poster? Thanks! Apologies in advance if I am confused and completely wrong on this.

If you cancel 30 days or less than your points go into holding and can't be banked. They also cannot be used to reserve any room until 60 days out.

But they can be banked? I read that if you cancel 30+ days all points in the reservation stay in that use year. Does this just apply to banked/ borrowed points?

If you cancel a reservation at least 31 days prior to arrival, the points go back into your account with the same status as they had while part of the reservation. So, banked points are returned as banked points, current UY points are returned as current UY points, and borrowed points are returned to your account as borrowed points.

Any current UY points returned can still be banked, provided you are still in your banking window. If not, then they expire at the end of the UY.

Any banked or borrowed points returned to your account can NOT be banked and those will expire at the end of the UY.

If one cancels 30 days or less prior to arrival, then all points, no matter what their status become holding points and not only expire at the end of the UY of travel, but also can only be used to reserve a reservation 60 days out.

If you book outside of DVC, such as one of the regular WDW hotels or a cruise, they remain "reservation points" and cannot be used for a DVC resort or banked if cancelled.

Sorry, I wasn't thinking about the 31 days. I was just thinking about the banking deadline.
