Booking a split stay

I apologize if this is a dumb question, but is there any specific way to book a split stay? I don’t see an option for split stays on the Disney site, but may be missing it. Do you just book a package for the first resort for part of the stay with tickets for the entire stay, and then separately book the second resort only for the remaining days? Thanks!

Yes, that is how it is done.

It’s fine to buy more ticket days than room days, so you can buy just one ticket length to cover both stays.

"Split stay" is really just fan lingo, Disney doesn't have a specific term for it. To their system it's just having more than one reservation under your name. You will also want to be aware that you will have two ADR days because of that. If you have any hard to get reservations on your list you will definitely want to save them for the end of the longer stay if you can.

If I don't have an AP, I book my rooms on Disney's site and buy my tickets from UT where I can get a little discount. Just know you don't need to buy a package.
Same! My family loves split stays -- usually 3-4 nights at a resort near HS/EPCOT, and then 3-4 nights at one near MK.

We book our rooms separately (sometimes a combination of DVC villas on rented points, and discounted rooms direct from Disney), and then purchase tickets from a reputable third party dealer (whatever one the touringplans ticket calculator tool - https://touringplans.com/walt-disney-world/ticket-calculator-disney-world-ticket-discounts - tells me will save us the most for our dates). Once it's all linked to DME, you manage everything exactly the same way you would if you'd booked a traditional room-and-ticket package with Disney. As others mentioned, you will have 2 ADR windows, 60 days out from each of your check-in days, because MDE isn't programmed to recognize that your hotel bookings combine to make a contiguous on-property stay.

Buying our tickets a la carte saves us as much as $200 for the four of us for the week. Although that means we don't get the package-specific perks, like mini-golf vouchers or refillable mugs, those are things we don't tend to use anyway, so we'd rather have the ticket savings.

FYI... the refillable mugs are not specifically a perk of booking a package (room+tickets). It's included with the dining plans, which is an add-on that generally requires a package booking. Also the refillable mugs can be purchased on their own.

The Magical Extras for a package booking include:
  • 4 vouchers for mini-golf
  • 4 vouchers for general admission to the ESPN WWoS Complex
  • 10% discount at Splitsville
  • some dining and shopping discounts
