There are some great winter deals going on for the DLR hotels right now. I've priced out a room only, and a package from costco. The costco package is a good deal considering it comes with the dining vouchers. BUT, buying trip insurance negates any savings, so I wouldn't buy it. What happens if you have to cancel a trip booked in a package like this? With kids you never know if someone is going to get sick.

It would depend on when you cancelled:

LAND CHANGE/CANCELLATION FEES & REFUNDS
Once deposit has been paid, a fee is assessed each time a change or cancellation is made. The cancellation/change fees are per reservation and are as follows: Days prior to arrival
................................Change..........................Cancel

30+ .............................$0..................................$0
29-0.............................$50.............................$200

Failure to check in to the hotel on the scheduled arrival date or to utilize any portion of travel package without prior notice of cancellation or change is assessed fees equivalent to 100% of package price. Unused tour vouchers or other package components (including, but not limited to, admission tickets) are not exchangeable or refundable. If appropriate insurance is purchased on or before final payment date, travel insurer may reimburse change /cancellation fees in accordance with terms of insurance policy. (Travel insurance is non-refundable once purchased.)
NO SHOWS ARE NONREFUNDABLE: Failure to check in to the hotel on the scheduled arrival date or to utilize your travel package without providing prior notice of cancellation or change is assessed fees equivalent to 100% of package price.
REFUNDS FOR UNUSED SERVICES: Tour vouchers or any unused package components including, but not limited to, admission tickets are not exchangeable or refundable.

Thank you! I couldn't find that info on their site. So basically I risk being out $200 if someone gets sick at the last minute? BUT, the paradise pier charges you one night anyway if you don't cancel more than 5 days early. And one night there with tax is close to that anyway. Hmmmm, what to do?

With a package if you reschedule its only a $50 change fee.

Yes, that's not bad at all. I'm just not sure I'd know when to reschedule it for. But I could do it a few times at $50 each, lol. Ok, so the package is actually a lesser risk. If I book it, Paradise Pier wouldn't charge me with one night fee separately right? I like the idea of having the little extra perks, since this is a christmas present for the kids. And we would use the dining vouchers for counter service food. That and the gift card equal $180, which is money we would spend there on food anyway, so in my mind I'm saving that money off the tickets.

We booked with Costco travel this summer and had to cancel less than 48 hours before going. We called them and they were great. They would not refund the cost of the vouchers or admission tickets until they received them back which makes sense. Since I had asked the vouchers be waiting at the hotel for us, not mailed to our home, they contact PPH and within 5 days the refund, - $200 was on our credit card. I was very impressed, absolutely no hassles.

You don't have to buy the insurance if you don't want it, it's an option. Just in case you didn't know :)
