I suggest signing up for email newsletters for some of your airlines, Priceline and Hotwire. I'm always getting great deals out of them. Of course, many of the deals are last minute, so I don't know how that will work for you.
I agree with JackSparrow. I suggest you sign up for the email club for each major airline you would consider flying such as Ding for Southwest, Airtran, JetBlue ( i got a coupon from them by signing up) etc.
Typically the best day to buy airfare is on a Tuesday. Generally thats when sales come out and prices go down. Another good tip is flying mid week is generally cheaper. Flying out on a Wednesday or Thursday is usually cheaper and flying back the same or on a Saturday. This is just general info and if you find a good deal go ahead and book it when you find it because they go fast.
Another option I have used before is booking a package thru Hotwire, Bookit etc. They are part of the Bill Me Later program. IF you qualify its defered billing for up to 6 months so you have longer time to pay off your vacation. Just another suggestion. It works for us sometimes. Best of luck.
