Booked Explorers direct with Disney: can we upgrade in a sale?

A friend has booked direct thro the DLP site so if there's a sale will they let her change her booking for an upgrade or to a different hotel or will they refund the difference?
I've heard that people have made changes but wondered if it would apply to the Explorers Hotel?

Disney won't refund the difference if there's a sale - although sometimes people have found if they cancel, lose their deposit, and then rebook at the sale price they still save money.

What people have found is that if they amend their booking ie. by upgrading their hotel or adding a dining plan, character meals etc they then benefit from the lower prices. I don't know if this also applies to the offsite hotels but if they have been booked through Disney I would assume so?
