I'm leaving on vacation in 2 days and have no book to read. I usually only read Stephen King or Dean Koontz or Dan Brown, but I'm done with all their stuff (except Lisey, but I don't want to take a hardcover!).

Can anyone recommend something similar?

Thanks!

Allison Brennan - The Hunt, The Prey, The Kill

These books are in the romance section, but they are more thrillers. They are very easy and entertaining reading, and great for vacation.

Although not exactly along the same lines (Horror, intensity), If you haven't read them before, I would recommend either Robert Ludlum or Clive Cussler.
Both are great authors that can keep you captivated in their stories.
For Ludlum I would recommend reading the Bourne Identity (If you've seen the movie, don't worry, the book is nothing like the movie - 100 times better) it is a great intro into the writing of Robert Ludlum. Lots of plot twists, character developement, intrigue, surprises, etc...
For Cussler I would recommend reading Dragon. Cussler is more of a straight up author. He takes one premise, a super-duper action hero, and revolves his story around the antics and abilities of this Character (Dirk Pitt). Although not as complicated as Ludlum, if you want a good guy winning by doing what good guys do best, then it's hard to beat Cussler.
Another option might be a good Michael Crichton book. He delves more into the scientific thrillers, but he is a great author who knows how to keep you hooked on his stories. Both Jurassic Park (Again, very very different from the movie) and Sphere are two great intro's into his work.
John Grisham is another of my favorite authors. His specialty is the law, and he uses some very colorful characters to tell some really great stories. His book, the FIRM, is a great intro into his work (this book is actually very much like the movie, except the ending).
And finally, I would recommend Tom Clancy. Without a doubt, one of my all-time favorites. He deals mostly with military themes, but he uses some of the best characters to bring across some amazing stories. Patriot Games is a classic example (Again, the book is very different from the movie, although you can't help but picture Harrison Ford's face while reading the book), or, if you want something a little more intense (and longer) from Clancy, try reading WITHOUT REMORSE. The character developement in this story is some of the best I've ever read.

Along the lines of the authors you've named is Greg Iles. I haven't read anything from him in about a year because he hasn't put anything new out, but I love his stuff. They are psychological murder mystery thrillers usually based in the New Orleans area. I find them very well written and keep me on the edge of my seat.

I can't even remember some of the titles. I think Blood Memory was one. Google him and you will see all his books. Definitely very good.

I LOVE Greg Iles - excellent books!

You might also want to check out the "Prey" series by John Sanford, the "Horsemen" series by James Patterson or the Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell! :thumbsup2

Nora Roberts has a new trilogy out, the 3rd one came out the other day, the Circle Trilogy--Morrigan's Cross, Dance of the Gods, Valley of Silence. They are 'romances' but they have a bit of a thriller/ghoul theme going too. Good vacation books because they don't require a lot of thought to read.

Light reading - Little Earthquakes, Good In Bed, In Her Shoes (Jennifer Weiner)

Very light reading - Shopaholic Series: Confessions of a Shopaholic, Shopaholic Takes Manhattan, Shopaholic Ties the Knot (Sophie Kinsella)

Also, I just bought The Thirteenth Tale after reading excellet reviews

I would say "The Ruins" by Scott Smith, but it's a hardcover. It's a lot like Koontz/King--psychological thriller leaning towards horror. You could also try John Saul's books- they're paperback and are horror-ish.

or try "The Time Taveler's Wife" it's got enough supernatural stuff in it to not be any old women's fiction, but it's well written and the story is intriguing.

Just finished Robin Cook "Marker"! OMG!! This was one of the BEST books I have ever read. Loved it!!

I'm really enjoying these. Getting ready to start the third one!

I liked that book, too! I usually can't put Cook's books down when I start one.

Robin Cook is excellent for medical thrillers. And he has a lot of them out, so you have a wide variety of choices.

An author I found recently that I haven't seen mentioned is Matthew Reilly. Most of his books are military thrillers, but they are REALLY fast paced. I started with Scarecrow, which is one of the later books in the series, and went back and read everything else.
