I know this is the Budget Board, but based on previous book related threads, I know there are lots of readers on this board. I have gotten so many great suggestions for books for my kids in the past. Plus I plan on borrowing any suggested books from the library, so that's budget related, right? ;)

I just finished reading Kate Morton's books (The House at Riverton, Forgotten Garden, and The Distant Hours), and I was sad to finish the last one, because I so love her writing style. I don't even know how to characterize them, sort of gothic fiction/ family saga maybe? :rolleyes1

Anyway, I'm headed to the library tomorrow and would love to pick up some books written in a similar style...any ideas?

Try Sara Allan Addison...I think I got the name right. Two of her books are Garden of Secrets and Sugar Queen. (If I got the names wrong and you have trouble finding them, pm & I will hunt down the books at home and verify the names).

I don't know if the writing is similar but sounds like it could possibly be.

I really loved the writing in The Book Thief, and it fits the style I think you are looking for. Great character development!

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield is a wonderful story, with some similarities to Morton's style.

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters was also one I loved. I downloaded her book Fingersmith as well and so far it is excellent. Read some reviews of the plots before you check her books out - some are in this genre and others are not.

Another favorite was The Sister by Poppy Adams. Two sisters, who have been estranged for years, come together again at the end of their lives in the crumbling mansion they shared with their family as children. I really loved this one.

You might also like Donna Tartt - while her books are not exactly in this genre, both The Secret History and The Little Friend are great reads, and have that big, sprawling family saga feel to them in some ways. I loved both of them.
