I'm not much of a reader; in fact, I can't remember the last time that I read a book...(for enjoyment)....but since we have a long flight ahead of us.... would love to get a GOOD book to read. I realize that this is a broad request...but does anyone have a bood book suggestion...something for a wife and mom in late 30's? Nothing 'too heavy' or lengthy...would like to be able to finish the book on our roundtrip.

THANKS!!

Anything by Nicholas Sparks should fit the bill. The books aren't fine literature by any means, but they are good love stories and are a quick read.

I noticed that you have teenage children. You might want to try reading a book with them! As a teacher, I always encourage parents to read along with their children. My students loved when their parents would read the same book they were reading. They really enjoyed discussing the book with them. Just buy a few copies (look for a used book store) so you can all read at your own pace. There are some great young adult books out there that adults can enjoy too. Also, many adult novels are approriate for teens too.

with Harry Potter. Also, another fast read (although you do have to pay attention) is The DaVinci Code. HTH

I just read Under the Tuscan Sun. I was caputred and enthralled the whole read. I know this may be considered sacreligious, but I now want my next big vacation to be Italy rather than WDW! Can I be forgiven for that scandalous thought?

I also have to recommend Harry Potter. The first of the series is very short and easy to read on a round trip IMO. I think you will love it.

My book club just finished Serving Crazy with Curry.......get it from the library. Should be just long enough for a plane ride. Such a good book. It's about an Indian family....their relationships and all.......it was just so good. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!

So many good books to suggest!

I have to agree w/the Harry Potter. Esp. as the new one comes out in a few weeks! Read the others to catch yourself up in the meantime!

And, I have to agree w/The DaVinci Code. Very intriguing and makes you go hmmmmm ...!

One of my favorites is "The Other Boleyn Girl" by Phillipa Gregory. Super, super interesting, esp. if you like the whole Henry VIII thing. It's a thick book, but a quick read. And, it is so well written that you can picture things vividly in your head. We read this for book group and everyone loved it -- which is rare since we always have 3 or 4 out of 15 that end up hating a book that others like. It's such a good, "I don't want to put it down" book!

Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver is excellent and not a difficult read. The Red Tent by Anita Diamante is good, too.

For a laugh out loud book, try the "Shopaholic" Series -- "Confessions of a Shopaholic" is the first, then there's "Shopaholic Takes Manhattan" and "Shopaholic Ties The Knot". Her newest is "Shopaholic and Sister". These are real chick-lit and light. Perfect for a flight.

Another two I enjoyed were "The Pilot's Wife" and "The Weight of Water" by Anita Shreeve. Oooh, forgot to mention "Memoirs of a Geisha" by Arthur Golden. Absolutely fantastic!!!! Nanny Diaries is good as well.

Hope these help you out! Happy Reading!

I got halfway though DaVinci Code and didn't bother to finish it. I may be the only person on the planet.

What do YOU like to read - when you do read? Romances? Mysteries? Children's books (I admit a weakness for children's books, yes, Harry Potter - but Princess Diaries, Anne of Green Gables, etc.). History? Classics (I read Pride and Prejudice and To Kill a Mockingbird ever year).

(I will have to say that House of Mirth was a poor cruise choice).

Thanks everyone for all of the wonderful suggestions! The DISers comes through again...and on a none-WDW subject. ;)

Several people mentioned DaVinci Code...what is this about?

What do I like to read...like I said...I don't....no time! Although I should would like to find time to begin a new 'hobby'. I probably would say that I'd like romances (nothing steaming)....and of course, as a mom...any good family, feel-good would be fine (I enjoy watching 7th Heaven, etc). And I also enjoy Disney movies with my girls (yes, Princess Diaries, etc.)....so maybe that helps....

oh, yea...I LOVE scrapbooking....is there a scrapbook novel?! :rotfl2:

you might try one of the Amelia Peabody mysteries by Elizabeth Peters. They're historical fiction/adventure/mystery/light romance/comedy all wrapped up in one, and are my favorite for "trip reading" just because they're lots of fun! You don't necessarily have to start with the first one, but if you want to it's called "The Crocodile on the Sandbank". Other favorites of mine are "The Snake, The Crocodile & the Dog"; and "The Last Camel Died at Noon".
Happy Reading!

I just finished one called The Beach House. Can't remember who wrote it. Has some romance, family stuff. Takes place on the Isle of Palms near Charleston S.C. The story evolves around Loggerhead Turtles nesting and the parallels with a families evolution.

A great quick read is White Lies by Linda Howard you can buy it on Amazon for like 6 bucks. Very good book. Its in the romance/suspence catagory..and is hard to put down. Great read! I highly reccomend it! ;)

I too am a mom (DS 10, DD 7) with very little spare time to indulge my voracious appetite for reading. Here's my secret. I read in bed -- at night while my DH channel surfs through one ball game or another and I always have my current novel on the nightstand so I can grab it first thing in the am -- while everyone else is still asleep! I'm an early riser so on the weekends I sneak in a few chapters while the house is still quiet. Oh, and since I'm a teacher, I read most of my books over the summer vacation months -- sometimes 10 or 12 books! Hey, I've got to make up for 10 months of practically no free time, right?! Having let you in on my time-finding reading strategies, here are some of my recent favorites:

The DaVinci Code by [/B] Dan Brown (I was once up until 2am reading this one -- I literally could not put it down! I've also heard that his Angels and Demons is good too, but I myself haven't read it)

Anything by James Patterson, Nicholas Sparks, or Jodi Piccoult.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares (I believe there are 2 sequels also)

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by the same guy who wrote Tuesdays with Morrie whose name escapes me at the moment! It's an amazing book and a really quick read. Very enjoyable.

Well, these are all good to start with. Good luck and Happy Reading!!

Thanks dianaphi! Some more great books...so many to choose from....I may just have to continue the 'reading' hobby to continue after vacation! :cool1:

There is one other book that I've heard other moms talk about, but can't remember the exact title...something about little girls in little boxes? Anyone know this one....or what the exact title is? I'll be checking out the book store this weekend for a book or two...

I love reading. A great one for a busy mom is "I Don't Know How She Does It" - a great story that was so much of what my life can be like!

DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons are both well written books. Both are fast paced mysteries with murder, intrigue, romance and some touches of reality (places, historical references).

I too wish I could spend more time reading for pleasure, but when I do, I love novels by Anita Shreve. Many of her titles involve a 30ish/40ish woman/mother -- exploring romantic and family relationships. She also incorporates a lot of history in her fiction. In my opinion, it's hard to put down one of her books and would be great to killing time during travel.

Enjoy your reading and vacation time!

Wow for an avid reader like me this is a fantastic thread. I HAVE to have a book on the go at all times. I read every night before I go to sleep-thats my relaxation technique. (Must be the :teacher: in me!) Its something I always make time to do even with DS 4 around.

Thanks for some great suggestions! :flower:

Daxx- Almost every book you suggested I have read but not The Other Boleyn Girl which I am going to pick up today for our trip in a couple of weeks.

James Patterson books are great and the guy that wrote Five People You Meet In Heaven is Mitch Alborn- its an easy, thought provoking read.

Ive also been reading Edward Rutherford lately. Heavy read but good.

Love this thread!!!!!!! :wave2:
