I'm in search of a great book series for my 8 year old niece. She is in 3rd grade and LOVES to read.

I don't know much about what she's read so far, but I do know that she adores The Secret Zoo series. She also mentioned a book (series?) that had 'forest' in the title that she read which I realize is probably not helpful. LOL

She talked about a book that is about a girl that wishes for wealth in her village and only has 2 coins. She buys a fish with one coin (according to my niece)...and I have no idea the title. :)

I'd love for series recommendations for her if anyone has any kids in her age group. What are the most popular books?

The Anne of Green Gables series is wonderful! I loved reading it as a child and as an adult.

On my 8 year old's bookcase she currently has:
Ronald Dahl box set
Little House on the Prairie
LOVES Magic Tree House Series
Romona series

I can ask my daughter if she has read the books you are talking about for a name.

Magic Treehouse
Cam Jansen
Little House on the Prairie
Magic Fairies
A to Z Mysteries

What I loved at that age:

The Warrior Cats series
Guardians of Ga'Hoole series
Percy Jackson series

I still re-read all of those books quite often. They're great because you can get a fair amount of content from them at her age, but as you re-read them when you're older, the books take on a much deeper meaning.

Is she a pretty advanced reader since she loves to read? My 3rd grade DD loved the wide awake princess book and its 2 sequels by E.D. Baker. She also loved Half upon a time, and is reading the 2nd book now and has the third waiting. She loves the Ever After High books-the ones that have the whole series of dolls. She loves Roald Dahl, especially the Charlie books and Matilda. She loved all the Ramona books by Beverly Cleary-I think there are 8 of those. She reads ALL the time. I'm sure I can come up with more if I think about it or ask her!

Up until about 3rd grade, DD loved:

Judy Moody
Junie B. Jones
Ramona

At around 4th grade she became more interested in books like:

Judy Blume books
Nancy Drew (they have a new modern series)
BabySitters Club (also has a newer series)
Diary of a Wimpy Kid series

My daughter really enjoyed the Emily Windsnap series of books around that age. Her friends enjoyed them as well...

Not a series, but most anything by Robin McKinley is great (especially Beauty, The Hero and the Crown, and The Blue Sword). The only one I wouldn't recommend for children is Deerskin.

Animorphs was my favorite series at that age, but it's out of print now. K.A. Applegate was the author.

DD loved: Nancy Drew (they have a new modern series)) Diary of a Wimpy Kid series

Oh yeah, DD absolutely loves the girl version of the wimpy kid- it is called Dork Diaries. She has read several of those. She is not a big fan of Wimpy kid- I don't know why. Despite my trying not to be gender stereotypical and to encourage her to read and play with all kinds of things, she rejects a lot of things she determines to be "boy" things. Is the new modern Nancy Drew series called something in particular? I bet she would love that. She has read all 37 of the Nancy Drew Clue Crew books-the ones where Nancy is 8. . That is another series your niece might like, but if she is a huge reader she may be an advanced reader, and they might be too low a level for her. DD still likes them and will read them when a new one comes out as she has read them all, but she started reading them back in 1st grade.

You are all so awesome! Thanks for all of the suggestions so far! I think there are several choices she would love from your suggestions. I used to hate reading as a kid (despite being an advanced reader) so I'm so proud and happy she enjoys reading. I'll look into all of the suggestions.

The Ramona series. Hands down.

Cant wait till DD is old enough, I loved those books.

Just bought these for a 4th grader that I babysit. I started to wonder if they aren't a bit too young for her. I hope not, as both I and dd loved them at that age.

I second the Nevergirls series. My now 4th grader loves them. Easy reads but fun she is counting down the days for the next one book 8 on Jan 6th lol also second the boxcar children. That was a fav of mine as a kid.

Okay, I'm thinking Ramona/Judy Blume books, Magic Tree House (but they look kind of young??), or Nevergirls (again, maybe too young?).

Winnie the Horse Gentler books sound perfect, as she is obsessed with horses (she lives on acreage but they won't let her get a horse yet), but she is not raised in a religious household so is there a strong God/religious message in them? She has gone to church with her grandparents a few times but her parents are not raising her with a religious upbringing so I don't want to gift her books that have a religious focus.
